Modern Apologetics Against the MP

Informational General Sharing: Modern Apologetics Against the MP: "Why I Am Not in The MP-ROC", by Eduard Baranovsky-a simple Orthodox Russian man's honest statements-

Note: My apologies that I do not have the time to smooth out this semi-rough machine-English translation, but most of it is easily understandable  to English readers...if not quite in perfect spoken English. One problem is that the writer is speaking mostly in the present tense, while writing  about past events, which is not correct English. This writing style  seems to be a common one in many Russian texts, which often seem to record past events, as if they are happening now....from an observer's view, as it is happening live. Of course in English we can also write that way, but we usually need to explain it at the beginning of our text. The mind-less machine-translator does not distinguish such language differences, when it translates Russian texts into English.

Eduard Baranovsky:
Why am I not in the MP-ROC? Yes, because!
Recently, I once again began to get questions: "Why do not you like the church you used to go to?", "What difference does it make where to go, because this is also Orthodoxy?"
Or they argue that "you do not go to the priests, and not to the patriarch (who, by the way, can err on the basis of their human weakness as any person), but God."
And I decided, if possible, to answer these questions unfolded, not only to make it clear to those who ask me, but also to once again "reboot" and "upgrade" myself.
My answer will consist of four separate parts, which, nevertheless, are related to each other, because in general, my opinion about this is one, and it seems to me quite simple and complete, otherwise I would never have changed my religious views, and accordingly, and significant for me my moments in real life.
So, the parts will be like this (today is the first one):
1. Historical aspect.
2. Modern "top view".
 3. Unexpected appearance of a closer and more correct variant for me or "There is a way out!".
 4. A comparison of what was "with" what "is here and now."
I will say at once that there are almost no theological and dogmatic calculations there.
I will try to describe everything with the eyes of an ordinary and not very educated person, as I, in fact, am.
Who needs more detailed, for example, historical or other information, you can find them on the Internet - there would be a desire.
Below each item, I will try to give some relevant, in my opinion, links.
So, we are talking about these points in more detail.
  2. Historical aspect.
  4.  (Or the reasons and history of the division of the Russian church in the 1920s-1930s).
As we all know, after the October 1917 coup, the "Red Terror" began.
All those who did not agree with the ideology and policies of the Bolsheviks were put in camps or shot - this fact is well known.
Including repression was subjected to a huge number of clergymen and active parishioners (and just parishioners) of the then "Russian Orthodox Church."
Lenin issues decrees that "the more we destroy the priests, the better" and says that "faith and the church must be destroyed as a class."
But it's not so simple.
There are too many believers.
Then, along with direct repressions (executions and terms in concentration camps), a special department of the GPU begins work on the division and destruction of the Russian church from within.
The first such project was the so-called "Living Church" (or "Renovationists") by which the Bolsheviks promised a relative freedom of action (and, in general, physical freedom) in exchange for its subordination to the GPU.
At first the project seemed to be successful, but then the church understood in its majority what it was dealing with, and, in general, did not go to the "Living Church leaders".
And those.
who for some reason were first there, began to leave from there.
The truth at that moment, you can say, "triumphed" and most of the faithful remained in the "Tikhonov" church (under the patriarch Tikhon).
This happened until the middle of the 20-ies.
The second project of the GPU for the collapse of the Russian church was sent directly to Patriarch Tikhon and his immediate entourage.
In part, the Bolsheviks succeeded in implementing it.
But Patriarch Tikhon differed in that if he was wrong, he had the courage and wisdom to correct his mistakes.
He made some concessions, but did not cross the boundaries of what was permitted.
And so the people of the church as a whole understood and loved him, and then, respectively, and canonized.
In 1924, the Patriarch died, leaving behind a list of possible deputies, from which the next Patriarch could be elected at the next Local Council.
With these lists (at first Patriarch Tikhon, and then his successor Metropolitan Peter (Polyansky) quite a rather complicated story came out, so I will not elaborate on it now.
In the meantime, the special department for fighting against  religion of the NKVD continued its work.
The head of this department, Tuchkov, was trying to reach agreement with many bishops close to Patriarch Tikhon.
Almost all of them "talked" with Tuchkov on this subject, being in custody on his (Tuchkov's) order.
Such were his methods.
After some unsuccessful attempts, there was such a "conversation" with one respected and "venerable" bishop of the Russian church Sergius (Stragorodsky), who, incidentally, "repented" just before Patriarch Tikhon in his departure for the "Renovationists".
After this "conversation" with Tuchkov, Sergius unexpectedly quickly got out of prison and got the right to live in Moscow, which he and other "prominent" bishops had never given him before.
After a while he (Sergius) collected his so-called "Synod" from almost all the former Renovationists and, in fact, with the support of the Bolshevik regime, takes the church power into their own hands.
In the summer of 1927, on behalf of the entire Russian Church, he wrote a "message" or the so-called "Declaration", in which he declares his full consent and support of the Soviet regime again, on behalf of the whole church.
And all this despite the fact that tens of thousands (with the most modest calculations) of clergymen and parishioners of the church have already been shot by "councils" this year, and hundreds of thousands are in concentration camps.
Simultaneously with the publication of the "Declaration," Sergius begins a general, erratic transfer of bishops from their canonical metropolias in the interests of the power of the Bolsheviks.
Some bishops, "unpromising" for the regime, move to remote metropolias or are "retired", others who allow cooperation with the Bolsheviks in their interests are appointed to the place of the old ones.
During all these manipulations and processes, the church, naturally, is in terrible embarrassment and misunderstanding.
People just did not understand what was going on.
The vast majority of bishops and metropolitans (and those who still serve, and those who "sit" in the concentration camps) understood that "something went wrong."
Sergiev's "Declaration" as a whole was not accepted by the church.
Many bishops, following the voice of conscience and their Christian beliefs, refuse to accept decrees about their transfer to other departments, ignoring Sergius and his "leadership."
Part of the most respected and beloved by their parishioners, the bishops began to separate in different ways from Sergius and his Synod.
Here and there are "Josephites", "Viktors", "Buivtsi" and many others, who nevertheless were united in two things - the desire to remain faithful to Christ and His church, and the forced break of relations and communication with the "church" of Strogorodsky.
It should be noted that such "offices" occur only after very, very many letters to Sergius that he "think better" and "return to the right path."
 Ему пишут о том, что он своими действиями обесценивает подвиг многих тысяч предыдущих и содержащихся в лагерях мучеников и исповедников за веру;
He is told that he, by his actions, devalues the feat of many thousands of those previous martyrs and confessors in the camps for their faith;
 о том, что нельзя жертвовать церковью и её правдой в угоду её внешней "легализации" режимом большевиков;
that one can not sacrifice the church and its truth for the sake of its external "legalization" of the Bolshevik regime;
that it is impossible to "combine the incompatible" - serving God and serving the regime, whose goal is to destroy the Christian faith in any of its manifestations in principle.
But he remains astonishingly deaf to these pleas, and "forbids in ministry" those pastors who wrote to him and denied him "in obedience."
Accordingly, they have only one way out to keep their conscience clean and their pastoral calling before people and before God - it's with pain in the soul for everything to separate from Sergius (Stragorodsky) and from "his Synod."
All this happens very soon, but in the end it happens.
And here, as if confirming their correctness, all possible power of the Bolshevik repressive machine collapses on these people.
After ten years of these people loyal to their Christian ideals, who in the church had a majority in 1927-28, there remain literally thousands, later hundreds, and even later literally dozens to the whole country.
In official documents of the NKVD they are called "counter-revolutionary religious organization of the CPI (true-Orthodox Church)".
And at the same time, as the wave of reprisals against the opponents of Sergius (Stragorodsky) increased, and due to various circumstances, due to lack of understanding and lack of reliable information, the main church mass of people started to gradually go to the Sergian temples that remain open (although there are enough of them too little is, by the way, proof that the "union" between Sergius and the authorities has not led to anything good).
Then during the Patriotic War in 1943, Stalin summoned Sergius (Stragorodsky) and agreed with him and his close "companion" on the official creation of the so-called "Russian Orthodox Church," asserting in the end, in it, Sergius (Stragorodsky) " Patriarch ".
In subsequent years, the history of the USSR and the history of the "Sergian" church are significantly "corrected" by the ideologists of the Soviet regime and gradually it becomes "the same," the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church on the territory of Russia for the less-faithful and gullible parishioners and clergymen of this organization.
At the end of the first part, I emphasize once again: what is written here is a very general and very simplified (in the sense of only the most basic moments) picture of what actually happened.
Those who have a desire to understand all this better I can recommend reading not the "popular" literature of the MP-ROC, but books of more or less conscientious historians.
It is interesting that among the priests of the MP-Russian Orthodox Church there are people who are well aware and, in general, correctly understand all these events.
For example, George Mitrofanov (here are his lectures on the history of the Russian church in the 20 th century:https://vk.com/club80373783 ) and many, many others.
And then, of course, the answer to the question "how do they manage to combine for themselves the true history of the MP-ROC and their ministry in this organization?"
for me it is still inexplicable.
The end of the first part.

Why am I not in the ROC. Yes, because. часть 2 part 2

The top view, or the realities of the present MP-ROC.

The second part I would like to start with a refined quote from the first part:
"In subsequent years, the history of the USSR and the history of the so-called" ROC "was significantly corrected by the ideologists of the Soviet regime and the synodal departments of the" church "itself, and gradually, for the majority of low-ranking parishioners and overly gullible clergymen, over time it became" the same, "" Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church "on the territory of Russia.
Let's see, without dwelling on a lot of details - what, is consistently "developing", today this "same" "holy and apostolic" came.
I should note that my "development" does not surprise me at all, because it should be perfectly clear to a normal person that if a structure loses its internal and external independence, accordingly, it automatically begins to adapt to its "master" and becomes the vehicle of his ideas.
For me, it is not very important what externalities the MP-ROC has achieved in recent times, because similar effects (such as the numerous beautiful buildings with rich interior decoration, the magnificence and high cost of the top management's clothing, the wide coverage of the population throughout the country and abroad, powerful verbal and substantive advertising across the "canonical" territory, a fairly "strong" management and financial structure), I can very well imagine any other major secular corporation.
We will talk about what, in my amateurish opinion, in the church should not be in principle simply because it is, in fact, thechurch - a community of people, one of whose tasks is, among other things, the pursuit of some kind of "holiness" ".
Somehow on the Internet, I saw one quote, the meaning of which is something like this: "people close to us talk about the shortcomings of people, smart people talk about events and phenomena, and the wise talk about ideas."
I think that this is true to a certain extent and therefore I will try not to talk about the personal sins of any people who are called to be the "face" of the organization, but about common phenomena and landmark events in the ROC that allow us to conclude that we are already dealing not with occasional accidents, but with an active and "developing" system.
And the first thing that is immediately visible to the unaided eye is the striking similarity of the MP-ROC and its absorption by power (not at all democratic, and this is a separate conversation, but also very interconnected with the "churchliness" of the ROC) and commercial structures with all the ensuing consequences.
Tell me why the leadership of the organization, which should be a person and an example for its rank-and-file members, and which is called to be a conscience for the entire nation of the country, is literally drowning in luxury, shamelessly picking up a lot of already poorly most important of its primary "cells" parishes?
Only now I do not need to put St. John of Kronstadt as an example, who "drove on a golden coach" (and I heard such arguments more than once), because comparing him, giving his last boots to the first drunkard he came across), with the current "pillars" of the MP-ROC simply not correct.
And tell me why the leadership of the organization (again, its so-called "face"), which is called first of all "to love my brother" (I'm not talking about enemies) and take care of my flock more than about myself, considers it permissible for him to destroy his parishes by some ridiculous transfer of the servants subordinated to them from their flock?
After all, the parish, as I understand it, is, to a certain extent, the family and, "shifting" to another place of the parish priest, they can be said to deprive the father's family?
This is the purpose for which this is done?
And why each such goal in each particular case is not voiced and discussed with those whom they want to "throw"?
Tell me why the part of the leadership of the organization, which is called to be the ideal of purity, is repeatedly and publicly reproached for perverted sexual intercourse?
And this guide itself, as a rule (it can already be said "according to tradition"), appears at best in the role of "we do not know anything, and in general, we did not stand with a candle at our feet," and at worst it is itself carrier of this "non-traditional" orientation?
And these acts are carried out with those of their younger "brethren", who depend on the leadership of the service subordination?
Believe me, it's disgusting and even "uncomfortable" for me to touch on this topic (and even more unpleasant to me, by the way, would be to take communion with these people from one Bowl), but we are now talking about such important things for the church as purity and purity.
It's not just that the church is called the "Bride of Christ", where the very word "Bride" implies virginity and chastity?
So let's even so, not in a Christian way, but purely in human terms ...
For example, imagine that I am periodically and publicly accused of by the whole country for knowing that I did not.
Moreover, the accusations are serious in the moral and ethical sense.
What are my actions? Correctly!
I need at least try to defend my dignity.
That is, speak to the society specifically for each point of these accusations, tell prosecutors that this is "wrong", and give arguments that will prove my rightness and my purity.
And if I understand such purely technical things, a simple person, why are they not understood by those who should be morally superior and better than me?
That's why I think that if there are no such explanations at the public and official levels (I would like to emphasize again - not "excuses" but explanations of the accusations of the accusers), then all these facts take place - this is also the hedgehog understandable.
Okay, let's not talk about carnal dirt, let's talk about things that are more elevated for the organization, so to speak, one of the main tasks of which is to preserve the purity of the Christian or Orthodox, in the sacred-paternal understanding of this word, the dogma.
And in the first place, it seems to me, it makes sense to talk about the so-called ecumenism, which since the middle of the last century is densely inherent in the MP-ROC.
After all, what is "ecumenism" in simple understandable words?
Ecumenism is the blurring of the line between different religions (the word "religion" I use here in the generally accepted secular sense) and the various "currents" within these religions.
That is, the main slogan of ecumenism can be put forward as a popular now in secular society maxim, that "religions are different, but they lead to one God (the big letter" G " for God, in this case is put under a big question)."
So, in this case, it's like saying: "There are a lot of different trains and stations in the world, but you can sit at any train station on any train, and in any case you will get to the right place for you".
But this is a crazy nonsense, is not it?
So, the ecumenist is just the person who believes in him and propagandizes this nonsense with his actions.
The Church, in the person of its spiritual leaders, has always understood and understands that this is nonsense and nothing else.
And, accordingly, in every way, in the measure of their spiritual and intellectual resources, tried to protect themselves from this delusion, forbidding (I myself do not like this word, but without it, believe me, just can not do) their ministers take part in joint religious acts with those who have different concepts and relationships with the church's main object of faith, that is, with its God.
And what do we see in the MP-ROC now?
The supreme spiritual leader of the organization that calls itself the Russian Orthodox Church, meets with the spiritual leader of another religious organization called the Catholic Church and signs with him an act about the closest cooperation, contrary to all rules of elementary spiritual hygiene.
The top officials of both organizations do not lag behind their "spiritual" mentors and also establish and develop "friendly relations" with them, embodying, as they try to explain, some kind of "Christian" love.
And here I ask to understand me correctly - I am in no way for enmity with Catholics and other Protestants.
 Quite the contrary.
After all, according to the teaching of the church, we must be "as much as possible in peace with all people."
And not only "to be at peace", but also to help him in every possible way, again, whenever possible, and this is what the gospel teaches.
But!
It is one thing - benevolence and help in some everyday and vital universal human aspects, but the spiritual unity in Christ, which the church has always guarded in the most careful way, is not the same thing, without allowing people with a changed and defective spiritual consciousness to approach it.
This "unity" has always been condemned by the most decisively recognized fathers of the church.
And people with a changed religious consciousness were clearly condemned as "heretics", having nothing to do with the church.
Therefore, the church and broke with them prayer and eucharistic communion.
Well, and tell me now, why in the MP- ROC there is such "unity" that is now flourishing literally at every step?
Still, of course, I really want to bring a few bright cases to the top leadership of the MP-ROC, which were loudly covered in the media and, I think, is not at all groundless, but I promised not to go down to personalities and "popular" media.
One could already, in general, write the "end of the second part", but there is one more question that can not be stopped on which it is impossible, and which is also decidedly and unequivocally incomprehensible to me.
It concerns the canonization of the saints.
More precisely, the canonization of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
Tell me, how can an organization canonize those people who called it a "false church" and broke with it, by their canonical and Eucharistic communion on this subject?
This is generally how ??! ...
After all, for her,[the MP-ROC]  should they at best be called schismatics ?!
How can you glorify in the face of "your saints" those who during their lifetime this so-called "church" was excommunicated in the person of their first hierarch?
And then what is the meaning of "excommunication" and such "canonization" ?!
And such facts in the case of the "canonization" of the MP-ROC of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia are more than enough.
The first names that come to mind are Bishop Victor Ostrovidov (died in exile in 1934), martyr Mikhail Novoselov (executed in 1938), our (in the sense of Petersburg) Metropolitan Joseph (Petrovykh) (shot in 1937) year), Metropolitan of Kazan Kirill (shot in 1937).
After all, all these people, each, of course, in its measure and time, but came to one common denominator: that the so-called "church" of Sergius Stragorodsky and his "synod" (the ancestor of today's MP-ROC, to whom it is still not clear) the church as such, is still now no longer - about what, they (these people), in fact, wrote and spoke about.
Here's how it is ?? !!
And again for me it's just a mystery.
And now - this is the end of the second part.
