Ukrainians will create their own miracle this Christmas by showing they remain unbowed despite Russian attacks that have plunged millions into darkness, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a defiant message on Saturday.
Speaking 10 months to the day since Russian launched a war that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions more, Zelenskyy said that while freedom came at a high price, slavery would cost even more.
"We endured at the beginning of the war - we withstood attacks, threats, nuclear blackmail, terror, missile strikes. We will endure this winter because we know what we are fighting for," he said.
Relentless Russian missile and drone attacks since October have caused massive damage to the power-generating system, regularly leaving major cities without water and heat.
Zelenskyy made his remarks in a video address to Ukrainians who celebrate Christmas in December. Most Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians and mark the occasion in early January.
"Even in complete darkness, we will find each other to hug each other tightly. And if there is no heat, we will embrace each other for a long time to warm one another," he said.
"We will smile and be happy, as always. There is one difference - we will not wait for a miracle, since we are creating it ourselves."
The clip, which lasted just under nine minutes, was filmed outside at night with just a few white lights and a Christmas tree in the background.

Zelenskyy noted Ukrainian troops were fighting battles in the eastern Donbas region while others were in exile both home and abroad, having fled the Russians.
"We have been fighting them for more than 300 days and eight years. Will we allow them to achieve what they want?" he said, referring to Russia's 2014 occupation of Crimea.
Zelenskyy said holidays “have a bitter aftertaste for us this year,” adding “we can feel the traditional Spirit of Christmas differently.”
“Dinner at the family table cannot be so tasty and warm. There may be empty chairs around it. And our houses and streets can’t be so bright. And Christmas bells can ring not so loudly and inspiringly. Through air raid sirens, or even worse – gunshots and explosions,” he said.
The president asked Ukrainians to “endure this winter because we know what we are fighting for.”
“Evil has no weapon stronger than the armor given to us by God. Evil smashes against this armor like a stone wall. We have seen this more than once. We endured at the beginning of the war. We endured attacks, threats, nuclear blackmail, terror, missile strikes,” he added.
Zelenskyy also reflected on the past 10 months of battle between Ukraine and Russia.
“Wherever we are, we will be together today. And together we will look at the evening sky. And together we will remember the morning of February 24. Let’s remember how much we have passed,” he said.
“Let’s remember Azovstal, Irpin, Bucha, Kramatorsk, Snake Island, Chornobayivka, Izium, Kherson. We make a wish. One for all. And we will feel joy. One for all. And we will understand the truth. One for all,” he added.

Ukrainians usually celebrate Christmas on Jan. 7, as do the Russians. But not this year, or at least not all of them.
Some Orthodox Ukrainians have decided to observe Christmas on Dec. 25, like many Christians around the world. Yes, this has to do with the war, and yes, they have the blessing of their local church.
The idea of commemorating the birth of Jesus in December was considered radical in Ukraine until recently, but Russia's invasion changed many hearts and minds.
In October, the leadership of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which is not aligned with the Russian church and one of two branches of Orthodox Christianity in the country, agreed to allow faithful to celebrate on Dec. 25.
The choice of dates has clear political and religious overtones in a nation with rival Orthodox churches and where slight revisions to rituals can carry potent meaning in a culture war that runs parallel to the shooting war.
For some people, changing dates represents a separation from Russia, its culture, and religion. People in a village on the outskirts of Kyiv voted recently to move up their Christmas observance.
“What began on Feb. 24, the full-scale invasion, is an awakening and an understanding that we can no longer be part of the Russian world,” Olena Paliy, a 33-year-old Bobrytsia resident, said.

The Russian Orthodox Church, which claims sovereignty over Orthodoxy in Ukraine, and some other Eastern Orthodox churches continue to use the ancient Julian calendar. Christmas falls 13 days later on that calendar,, or Jan. 7, than it does on the Gregorian calendar used by most church and secular groups.
The Catholic Church first adopted the modern, more astronomically precise Gregorian calendar in the 16th century, and Protestants and some Orthodox churches have since aligned their own calendars for purposes of calculating Christmas.
The Synod of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine decreed in October that local church rectors could choose the date along with their communities, saying the decision followed years of discussion but also resulted from the circumstances of the war.
In Bobrytsia, some members of the faith promoted the change within the local church, which recently transitioned to being part of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, with no ties to Russia. When a vote was taken last week, 200 out of 204 people said yes to adopting Dec. 25 as the new day to celebrate Christmas.
“This is a big step because never in our history have we had the same dates of celebration of Christmas in Ukraine with the whole Christian world. All the time we were separated,” said Roman Ivanenko, a local official in Bobrytsia, and one of the promoters of the change. With the switch, he said, they are “breaking this connection” with the Russians.
“The church is Ukrainian, and the holidays are Ukrainian,” said Oleg Shkula, a member of the volunteer territorial defense force in the district that includes the village. For him, his church doesn't have to be linked to “darkness and gloom and with the anti-christ, which Russia is today.”
In 2019, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church, granted complete independence, or autocephaly, to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Ukrainians who favored recognition for a national church in tandem with Ukraine’s political independence from the former Soviet Union had long sought such approval.
The Russian Orthodox Church and its leader, Patriarch Kirill, fiercely protested the move, saying Ukraine was not under the jurisdiction of Bartholomew.
The other major branch of Orthodoxy in the country, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, remained loyal to Moscow until the outbreak of war. It declared independence in May, though it remains under government scrutiny. That church has traditionally celebrated Christmas on Jan. 7.

Sermon on the Day of the Canonization of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia by Metropolitan Philaret (Voznesensky) of blessed memory. (On the 40th anniversary of their glorification by the Russian Church Abroad).
When I, a sinner, behold this image [the icon painted by Archimandrite Kiprian (Pyzhov) 40 years ago-ed.] before us, I remember the words from the Apocalypse. John the Theologian saw at the Throne of the Lord twenty-four elders, and in addition, as he says, a great multitude of people who could not be counted, standing in brilliant white garments, holding palm fronds as a symbol of victory.
One of the elders asks John the Theologian “What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God… and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.” I remember this as we ponder this holy icon depicting the host of New Martyrs and Confessors whose number, truly, we do not know.
Who can count them? Who can even mentally grasp how many of our brethren lay down their lives for their faith and for the truth of Christ? Indeed, as was said yesterday, during the entire history of our Homeland there is not one corner which was not suffused with the blood of the witnesses of Christ. And if our Homeland was first to display to the world this horrid blasphemy, this terrible profanity and the mindless rebellion of the people, in which bandits seized power, though the land was desecrated by this horrifying impiety never seen before in the history of mankind, the blood of the Holy Martyrs and Confessors bountifully sprinkled the Russian land and purified our Homeland from this disgrace. And so you and I today celebrate their glorification.
Once again I say: it is not we, of course, who glorify them. They are saints before God, God crowned them, and the Church, through its canonization, only points to the fact that these new saints are righteous before God, to whom we can now turn in prayer in accordance with the standards of the Church. And so let us remember this also: St Theophan the Recluse once wrote to someone: “This canonization of saints and their commemoration does not only mean that we can pray to them and praise them, but that we emulate them in our lives and spiritual struggles.” Our brethren, who through this struggle entered the life beyond the grave and are now glorified, they were the kind of people who when the time came for heavy tribulation and trials, proved devoted to God and to Divine truth.
For the time being we have not been touched by such troubles, but we know how confused and complicated life is, how it presents on a daily basis unexpected and unwelcome news: what will come to pass we do not yet know, and very possibly our fate will meet something similar. So as we pray to them and praise them, let us pray at all times that they bolster our feebleness and doubt, should we also come face-to-face with evil as did they.
Yesterday we discussed how no one in the history of mankind ever assaulted the Church of Christ with such hatred as in Russia. But the words of our Savior came to pass! He said: “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” And it is so. This host of Martyrs who preserved their faith in Christ point to the victory of the Church over this evil, this terrible attack, the pouring forth of wickedness. You know how it is at sea during a storm: enormous waves, entire mountains of water crash upon the cliffs, yet the cliffs stand unharmed, unshaken, and this huge wave helplessly dissipates and retreats. They crashed before and will continue to crash, because the words of Christ are true.
The Church of Christ will not be overcome by any force of darkness, let us only take care to learn from the example of our Martyrs and Confessors and likewise preserve devotion to the Lord always, everywhere and in all the ways they did.
Amen.

From December 16 to 19, Metropolitan Agafangel made an archpastoral visit to our Nicholas parish in Lyon (France).
On Saturday, December 17, he prayed at the All-Night Vigil, and on December 18, on the 27th Sunday after Pentecost, he officiated the Divine Liturgy, co-served by Archpriest Christo Petkov and Priest George (TOC of Greece), with Protodeacons German Ivanov-Thirteenth, Evgeny Doroshin and the deacon Alexandra (Greek CPI). At the Hours before the Liturgy, Vladyka Agafangel tonsured a parishioner of the Longin-Sok Church as a reader, and at the Small Entrance with the Gospel he consecrated reader Zhivko Zhelev as a subdeacon.
At the end of the Liturgy, a moleben was served to St. Nicholas of Myra, whose memory was celebrated on Monday, after which a procession was made around the church.
After the divine services there was a solemn meal in honor of the Patronal Feast.
After the meal In the evening, the All-Night Vigil was held in memory of St. Nicholas. On December 19, early in the morning, Metropolitan Agafangel left to go back home, to War-Under Attack, Odessa, Ukraine.

Graphene oxide is detected in the body by our immune system as if it were a pathogen. In our Kiev parish in honor of the Great Martyr Vyrvara (rector Archpriest Sergiy Smyrygo), 14 people came to the temple day, on Saturday. In Kyiv, there is no electricity and water for almost a day, the elderly went down from 8-9 floors on their own and came to the service on foot. Many were left without work, many left for Germany and Poland.

Due to power outages, please help us survive the heating season. In Odessa, in recent days, due to Russian shelling, electricity has been cut off. Our generator (7 kW) consumes 80 liters of gasoline ($80) per day, without it the pumps of the solid fuel boiler cannot work. You also need to pay for the work of the stoker. Fuel (coal, firewood, pallets) is prepared enough. Last year there were no power outages, and we lived the heating season safely. This year, if there are frequent shutdowns, we will not be able to survive the heating season on our own.

В связи с отключениями электроэнергии, просим помочь пережить отопительный сезон. В Одессе в последние дни из-за российских обстрелов отключается электроэнергия. Наш генератор (7 кВт) в сутки потребляет 80 литров бензина ($80), без него не могут работать насосы твёрдотопливного котла. Также надо оплачивать труд истопника. Топлива (уголь, дрова, паллеты) заготовлено достаточно. В прошлом году не было перебоев со светом, и мы отопительный сезон прожили благополучно. В этом году, если будут частые отключения, мы самостоятельно отопительный сезон прожить не сможем.
