Sergey Lavrov’s five decades of service in Moscow’s foreign policy system has included the UN ambassadorship from 1994 to 2004, during which the essayist worked for five years as a journalist covering the UN. Can we shed a tear for Sergey Lavrov? Who could have foreseen, a few years back, the huge mess he now finds himself in?
Spanning five decades of service in Moscow’s foreign policy hierarchy, the veteran envoy has worked his way up to the very highest levels of international diplomacy after starting out in an entry-level job in the Soviet Union’s Sri Lankan embassy in 1972. Among his most distinguished postings, he served as Moscow’s top ambassador to the United Nations from 1994 to 2004 before moving up to become its foreign minister, a job he has held onto for 18 years.
But instead of savoring his golden years, Lavrov, 72, finds himself and his government the targets of deep global contempt over their role in launching and defending Moscow’s devastating assault on Ukraine. In an extraordinary development, he is living under the weight of personal sanctions.
Rather than looking back with contentment on a lifetime of shrewd negotiation, he spends his time these days trying to fend off insults as he pushes Russia’s justification for the invasion and attempts to defend his government against accusations of human-rights violations, terrorism, genocide and other war crimes.
At the same time, the Western news media dwell on Moscow’s military setbacks. The gruesome videos seen on television and social media display far more charred tanks than signs of combat progress, while haunting photographs immortalize shattered apartment buildings and corpses on the ground.
It’s not that Lavrov is showing signs of weakness during public appearances or heavy sweating during tense news conferences and lengthy TV interviews. He still comes across as the feisty talker he has always been for decades. But it must be hard to serve as a global punching bag.
As Russia’s UN ambassador, Lavrov was a member of that rare club of diplomats representing a nuclear power with a permanent seat and veto power in the Security Council. (Let us not forget, of course, that the UN Charter obliges members of this club, above all, to bear “primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.”)

At six-foot-one, impeccably clad in a trim dark suit, he appeared to fit the bill with his imposing figure, a deep voice capable of generating fear as well as respect, and a face that could intimidate but also occasionally evinced charm, revealing a small smile during a relaxed moment.
Allies and rivals alike praised his negotiating skills, his intelligence and his fluent if blunt English. He had a clear gift for debating and also remembering long-ago facts, dates and places.
Standing outside the Security Council chamber during a break, he could typically be found smoking nonstop, casually grinding his butts into the carpet in a one-man protest against a 2003 smoking ban imposed by then Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
He also used Council pauses to grab a drink, no matter the time of day, disappearing into the nearby bureau of a Russian news agency that kept vodka in a filing cabinet for him and other Russians who might find themselves working close by. It was not unusual to see Lavrov in a UN corridor spending a few moments gossiping with a few favored journalists, though he did not take kindly to those who enjoyed asking tough questions.
But times have changed.
As Western leaders immediately ganged up on Moscow over what they called an illegal and unprovoked invasion, Lavrov tried to turn the tables on his accusers by warning that military support for Ukraine meant the alliance “in essence, is engaged in a war with Russia” that could lead to escalation and a nuclear confrontation — or even World War III. “The risk is serious, real. It should not be underestimated,” he said.
Rather than quake at this tough talk from the chief diplomat of a major world power, his rivals dismissed his threats as bluster. “This only means Moscow senses defeat in Ukraine,” Ukraine Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted in April.
Rather than cower, the United States, Britain and other Western powers have sought to counter the assault by unleashing literally thousands of sanctions, including asset freezes, expulsions, travel bans and seizures of yachts and real estate, aimed at Russian officials, business figures and even so-called influencers as well as private and government entities.
Unusually, the targets include Lavrov himself, his wife and an adult daughter. Also hit was the socialite daughter of a woman identified by Russian insiders as part of Lavrov’s “second family,” including his longtime “unofficial wife.” These sanctions aim to inflict economic pain on Lavrov and some of the people near and dear to him by tying up their foreign properties, cash, investments and outside business activities.
“As Foreign Minister, Lavrov has advanced the false narrative that Ukraine is the aggressor as he has aggressively sought to justify Russia’s actions globally. Additionally, as the top diplomat representing Russia on the world stage, Lavrov has helped facilitate Russia’s aggressive actions against sovereign states and enabled Russia to degrade democracy globally,” the US Treasury Department said in a Feb. 25 press release announcing some of the earliest sanctions, one day after the war started.
The invasion has undermined Russia’s global standing in many other ways. The UN General Assembly voted in April to suspend Moscow from the 47-member Human Rights Council following allegations of atrocities against civilians in Ukraine. The vote was 93 to 24 with 58 nations abstaining. Russia responded by quickly announcing that it had resigned from its seat before the suspension.
Lavrov was also humiliated when about a hundred diplomats walked out of a speech he was trying to present to the Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 1. Lavrov could not even attend the session in person because of a European ban on flights from Russia. So he launched into the speech on a video link, only to learn that most attendees were stalking out of the chamber, leaving him to address a mostly empty room. He used the speech to present the spurious claim that Ukraine was seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.
Clearly stung by the hostility displayed by the international community, Lavrov has fought back through the media, but not always in the most constructive ways. Earlier this month, for example, his boss, Russian President Vladimir Putin, had to apologize to Naftali Bennett, the Israeli prime minister, after Lavrov put forward another baseless claim: that Hitler had Jewish roots.
From the start, Russia insisted that it had to launch its “special military operation” against Ukraine to “denazify” the country. That led Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky to ask what kind of nazification his nation could have “if I am a Jew?”
“In my opinion, Hitler also had Jewish origins, so it doesn’t mean absolutely anything,” Lavrov responded in a May 1 interview on Italian television, as translated by The Associated Press. “For some time we have heard from the Jewish people that the biggest antisemites were Jewish.”
Jewish leaders were appalled. Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid quickly branded Lavrov’s statement “unforgivable and scandalous and a horrible historical error.” Putin called Bennett to offer a rare apology. “The Prime Minister accepted President Putin’s apology for Lavrov’s remarks and thanked him for clarifying the President’s attitude towards the Jewish people and the memory of the Holocaust,” Bennett’s office said.
Lavrov served two long stints at the UN in New York City. Between 1981 and 1988, he held the posts of first secretary, adviser and senior adviser in the Soviet Mission before returning to Moscow to take on several top jobs at its Foreign Ministry.
The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and Lavrov returned to New York City in 1994 to take on the new Russian Federation’s top UN job as its permanent representative. He held onto that post when then-President Boris Yeltsin resigned and handed the reins to his chosen successor, Vladimir Putin, in 1999. On March 9, 2004, Lavrov returned to Moscow as minister of foreign affairs.
Those stints in New York City were far different from the job he handles today. A top priority back then was to use the UN as a forum to hold Washington accountable for its words and deeds. Today, Lavrov’s task is to convince the world that Putin tells the truth.
Moscow and Washington managed to get along somewhat better than they had before the end of the Cold War in 1991. In the late 1990s, Lavrov worked side by side with the US on a variety of crucial matters, including the drive to end Iraq’s efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction. In a 2001 interview for a Yale University UN oral history project, Lavrov boasted of his government’s recognition of the importance of supporting the Security Council’s work.
“You’re not as cynical about the future of the Security Council as many are,” the questioner put it to Lavrov in the interview.
“Well, I still have about, I hope, not less than 10 years to go before my retirement, so I cannot be pessimistic about my job,” he responded.
But now his relations with the West are openly hostile, his words cutting and even sarcastic as he increasingly accuses Western leaders of an enduring bias against Russia.
After talks with his British counterpart, Liz Truss, in February, Lavrov said her delegation had shown up “unprepared” and described their two-hour meeting as “a dialogue of a mute person with a deaf person.” While the session, which took place before Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, was meant to try to head off an attack, Lavrov declared that Western worries about Russia’s military buildup along its frontier with Ukraine were “incomprehensible anxieties.”
If only he had known then what we know now.
Two weeks after the Truss-Lavrov meeting, Putin announced the start of his country’s “special military operation” even as, eight time zones away in New York City, the Security Council was meeting in a late-night emergency session, called by Ukraine, to try to head off an invasion. As previously reported by PassBlue, the first reports of explosions in Ukraine began surfacing about 20 minutes into the meeting. (Ironically, Russia was president of the Council that month.)
“You have a smartphone, you can call Lavrov now. We can make a pause to let you go out and call him,” Ukrainian Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya told Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia as news of the bombings kept streaming in.
But Nebenzia did not respond. Three months later, the conflict that Moscow has refused to describe as “war” is still raging.

Thousands of Ukrainian children fleeing the war zone are being seized and adopted out to "foster" families in Russia, The New York Times reported Saturday.
"I didn't want to go," the Times reported Anya, 14, who escaped a home for tuberculosis patients in Mariupol and is now with a foster family near Moscow, saying. "But nobody asked me."
Russian forces occupying the Ukrainian city of Mariupol reportedly grabbed children fleeing the war-torn city's boarding schools and group homes as they tried to pass through checkpoints and were sent on buses inside Russia where families are "adopting" them, according to the report.
The transplanted children are being welcomed as "Russian citizens" into their new homes by the state, who is claiming the children to be "abandoned" in the war.
According to the Times' report, this "systematic" resettlement of children is part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's plan to show the military action as "noble," casting the nation as a "savior" in its propaganda.
While neither Rusia nor Ukraine can provide accurate numbers of children transferred since the war began in February, Russian authorities announced in April that 2,000 children had arrived in Russia, mostly from group homes and orphanages, according to the report.
Russian Olga Druzhinina, who lives in the Siberian city of Salekhard told the Times that she has taken in four children ages 6 to 17.
"Our family is like a small Russia," Druzhinina said in an interview with the Times. "Russia took in four territories, and the Druzhinin family took in four children. We are not taking what is not ours."
According to the Times, some of the children were enticed to go to Russia voluntarily.
"They were promised a new, wonderful life," said Natalia, a foster mother from Mariupol. Her 15-year-old foster son agreed to go to Russia, she said in the report. "These are children of a difficult fate. They are easily deceived."
One 17-year-old transplanted to Russia told the Times their "new" country would provide them what they wanted and needed.
"We were told: 'If you need gadgets or clothes, just tell us. We will buy everything. If you want, you can just go and relax. We will show you Moscow,'" Timofey Chmel said. "'If your parents abandoned you, they do not need you. We will help you.'"
Putin has expedited turning the children into Russian citizens, welcoming the first group of new citizens in July, the Times reported.

Russia's Vladimir Putin's luck might have run out, but he remains willing to sacrifice 20 million of his soldiers to cling to his desired objection-goals in Ukraine, a former Russian diplomat says.
"You should have no doubt about it, he may sacrifice 10 or 20 million Russians just to win this war just to slaughter all Ukrainians because it's a matter of principle," Boris Bondarev, who quit in May as a nuclear disarmament ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva over Putin's war, told Sky News. "It's a matter of political survival to him.
"You have to understand that, if he loses the war, it will be the end for him."
Putin is using nuclear blackmail to "compel other countries to whatever he wants," added Bondarev, who is calling for a regime change in Russia – stoking the flames of desperation of a leader clinging to power.
"I think the 20 years of him in power have been very lucky for him," he continued. "He is not smart, he is just lucky. Now I think his luck is over."
Bondarev vowed to quit the day the Russian tanks crossed into Ukraine in February, saying he could "no longer work for this government, this country," but he held out until May, so he could save his cat as Russia was "making war crimes and terrible mistakes and crimes against our future generations."
"I had some affairs to be settled before I quit," he said. "My cat was in Moscow at the time, so we had to get him back to Geneva and it took three months.

"During these two months I was very afraid.
"After the war started, they all turned out to be warmongering and very content with what is going on."
Bondarev "did not believe President Putin was seriously going to start the war," but now he is convinced the Russian dictator is desperate to sacrifice lives to save face.
"After losing the war, he will have to explain to his elites and his population why it is so and he may find some problems in explaining this," Bondarev said.
"And after that there may be opposition who will try to depose him or he will try to purge his subordinates to find some people who could be blamed for all these problems. There will be a period of internal turmoil."
But first, there will be nuclear escalation in a "new level of history of nuclear weapons," he warned, calling it a "very dangerous development"
"I believe that there can be some plans to somehow deploy nuclear weapons during this war in Ukraine," he said.
"The West, I think, must be consistent to remove Putin because while he and his regime is still in power in Russia, the threat of nuclear war will not go anywhere."
While NATO expansion was the primary reason for Putin starting the war, Bondarev believes NATO should consider entering the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
"Putin thinks he's already waging the Third World War," Bondarev said.
Short of direct military protection, Bondarev added calls for weapons armament for Ukraine.
"They need offensive weapons, more long-range missiles, aircraft," he said. "So I think NATO must double down the efforts and help.
"Russian people, especially younger generations, they don't see NATO as some kind of existential enemy, they are totally OK with that, as NATO is a defensive organization."

The time is coming when everyone who kills you will think that he is serving God (Jn 16:2).
Now many Russians do not believe that their warriors - soldiers of the Russian Federation - are committing crimes against civilians in the occupied territories of Ukraine with bestial cruelty. For the Russian inhabitants, this seems impossible, because, according to the opinion inspired by him-i.e. Putin, the Russians are a source of exclusively goodness and justice, which they in Ukraine are waging a sacred and noble struggle against Ukrainian evil and Nazism.

Working now on the church calendar, I entered the names of the new martyrs, the dates and circumstances of whose death have now become known. I was always struck before, and struck now, by the exceptional cruelty with which the representatives of the Soviet authorities killed their own peaceful fellow citizens. Even clergymen were bodily flayed alive while alive, buried in the ground, burned, dipped to death in an ice hole, hung in the Royal Gates of the iconostasis, drowned in toilets, and so on - there are many such cases documented. One bishop had his cheeks cut out before being killed, and in this form, with a drooping jaw, in full bishop's vestments, they were led around the city. And all this mass of atrocities was not committed by foreigners against Russians, it was done by those who are called their own - people from here.
And the same thing happens in this war. In Odessa, a few years ago, there was a case when representatives of the Russian Federation beat a captive boy, then cut off his ears, castrated him, and released him. "Having lived" for ten days at home, the boy hanged himself. And how many corpses have already been found with their hands tied behind and shot in the back of the head? How many dead and maimed children? What is the cynicism with which the Russians, Putin’s ‘Russians’, are now bombing thermal power plants in Ukraine so that the people will freeze in winter? All this goes under the enthusiastic remarks of the Russian inhabitants: so, they say, ‘they deserve it, more of them should be killed.
The source of injustice is the devil. The devil took our land captive in 1917, and his servants have behaved accordingly ever since. And the Moscow Patriarchate, in the person of the false Patriarch Kirill, the Church of Satan, the church of the harlot, blesses the wicked to commit these crimes.
I have already said many times, and I will repeat now - all this is done not by truly Russian people, but by non-national Soviet people, who have nothing to do with the Russian people and have no real Orthodoxy - representatives of the post-Soviet international demon-bearing people.

Therefore, it is not at all surprising that the representatives of the Russian Federation are committing atrocities on the land of Ukraine - after all, they only continue the existing practice of their closest ancestor Soviet relative , whom they continue to be proud of. According to their leader - they have not yet deployed in real, full strength - they have not begun, "even started."

Для российского обывателя это кажется невозможным, ведь, по внушённому им мнению, россияне — это источник исключительно добра и справедливости, которые в Украине ведут священную и благородную борьбу со злом и нацизмом.

Работая сейчас над церковным календарём, я вносил имена новомучеников, даты и обстоятельства смерти которых теперь стали известны. Меня всегда поражала раньше, и поразила сейчас, исключительная жестокость, с которой представители советской власти убивали своих же мирных сограждан. Даже священнослужителей — с живых сдирали кожу, закапывали в землю, сжигали, окунали до смерти в прорубь, вешали в Царских вратах, топили в сортирах и так далее — таких случаев задокументировано множество. Одному епископу перед убийством вырезали щёки и в таком виде, с отвисшей челюстью, в полном архиерейском облачении, водили по городу. И всю это массу зверств совершали не инородцы и иноплеменники, это делали те, кого называют своими — выходцы отсюда.
И в эту войну происходит подобное. У нас в Одессе, несколько лет назад был случай, что пленного паренька представители РФ избивали, потом отрезали уши, кастрировали, и выпустили на свободу. "Пожив" дней десять дома, паренёк повесился. А сколько уже найдено трупов со связанными сзади руками и выстрелом в затылок? Сколько убитых и покалеченных детей? Чего стоит цинизм, с которым сегодня расстреливаются россиянами тепловые станции в Украине, чтобы народ зимой замёрз? Всё это проходит под восторженные реплики российских обывателей: так, мол, им и надо, побольше их убить следует.
Источник несправедливости — дьявол. Дьявол пленил нашу землю в 1917 году, и слуги его с тех пор ведут себя соответственно. И Московская патриархия в лице лже-патриарха Кирилла, — церковь Сатаны, церковь-блудница, — благословляет беззаконников творить эти преступления.
Я говорил уже много раз, и повторю сейчас — всё это совершают не русские люди, а безнациональные советские, никакого отношение к русскому народу и настоящему православию не имеющие — представители постсоветского интернационального народа-бесоносца.

Потому нисколько неудивительно то, что представители РФ творят жестокости на земле Украины — они ведь только продолжают существующую практику своих ближайших предков, которыми они продолжают гордиться. По заявлению их вождя — они ещё не развернулись в настоящую, полную силу — они ещё "даже не начинали".
Вразуми их, Господи, и пошли всем покаяние!

Twitter blocked and then unblocked Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo's post regarding a study indicating that COVID-19 mRNA vaccines have caused increased deaths among young men ages 18 to 39.
"This analysis found that there is an 84% increase in the relative incidence of cardiac-related death among males 18-39 years old within 28 days following mRNA vaccination," a press release from the Florida Department of Health read. The press release was linked in Ladapo's Twitter post.
"With a high level of global immunity to COVID-19," Florida's Department of Health continued, "the benefit of vaccination is likely outweighed by this abnormally high risk of cardiac-related death among men in this age group. Non-mRNA vaccines were not found to have these increased risks."
Lapado's original post was on Friday, but Twitter responded swiftly, deleting it. Below, Twitter appends its reasoning for the censorship, according to Politico.
"Our current misleading information policies cover: synthetic and manipulated media, COVID-19 and civic integrity. If we determine a tweet contains misleading or disputed information per our policies that could lead to harm, we may add a label to the content to provide context and additional information."
On Sunday, Twitter unblocked the tweet.
Lapado has long been a critic of COVID vaccines and has promoted alternative treatments such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. He faced criticism during his confirmation process in the state Senate. Democrats at one point walked out during his testimony.

Myself having spent a number of past younger years of my life caring for the sick and dying in hospitals, this Carol Burnett comedy, is all-too-true-to-life, as much too-often, family visiting the sick, “TO CHEER THEM UP”, would get into family fights, centered around the sick bed-ridden patients, and often too, the central delicate subject of: ‘What was in the patient’s Last Will And Testament?’ , was at the center of the arguments. The patients were usually very happy, when they all left, when ‘visiting hours were over’.

Atheist Dad Is Transformed After Glimpse of Heaven as Toddler Son Is Taken Off Life Support

A family who lost their 2-year-old son due to respiratory complications of the flu virus 11 years ago have said that what God did for their lives, and in the lives of others through their son, has been nothing short of a miracle.
A former atheist, dad Darin Hamm shares his story of how a glimpse of heaven transformed him and led him on a journey of faith, while his late toddler son, Griffin, was given only a few hours to live before he was taken off life support.

A Gifted Child
Darin and his wife, Jennifer, say their toddler son, Griffin, a bright-eyed little boy with beautiful curly blonde locks of hair, was a “content, happy, and observant child who loved what all boys do—tractors, cars, and being outside with his daddy.”
“It took seven years to have him,” his parents told The Epoch Times, “and he was a gift from God.”

Facing Trials in Marriage and in Faith
Although parenting Griffin and their older son, Dylan, went smoothly for Darin and Jennifer, the father of three said they’d been going through a very difficult time in their marriage.
Jennifer described that, during that time, her husband dealt with a profound amount of anger and frustration toward others. It was not uncommon for him to get into an altercation with someone who upset him at the store or out in the community. He was often unpredictable, and she’d been counseled to consider divorce. However, she struggled and found hope through her faith.

On the other hand, Darin said he was a proud atheist who “hated Christians,” feeling they were usually inauthentic and the many he knew were corrupt. He said he often dealt with people who claimed to believe in God but didn’t live a good life.
As an owner of a large business in the Central Pennsylvania region, in an area where many professed faith, he often felt discouraged by others’ behavior and became further angered as a result.
Thus, when Jennifer would visit churches, looking for a place for Griffin to be baptized, Darin would tell her she was chasing “the invisible man,” referring to a God he didn’t believe existed.
Experiencing Heaven and a Glimpse of Eternity
However, on a cold January day in 2011, things took an unusual twist for the Hamms. After days of Griffin being on life support due to an unforeseen turn in his ability to breathe, Darin had an experience that would change the course of his life.
The family had been in the hospital at that time for four days and were told that Griffin was brain dead and that in 24 hours, they were going to disconnect him from life support.
“I told the doctors that I didn’t want to guess every time someone walks in the room if they’re going to do that, so I needed them to set a time,” Darin said. “So it was 4:30 p.m. when we had this conversation, and so they said the next day at 4:30 p.m. they’d remove the life support.”
Both the parents were told by Griffin’s medical team that they were going to unwrap his head, and the couple was given permission to lie down with him. Darin watched Jennifer as she lay down with her son for hours, knowing she didn’t have much time left with him.
“At 11 o’clock, she said, ‘I feel terrible, I haven’t shared,'” Darin said. “She got up, and I laid down with him.”
However, for Darin, the last few hours with Griffin were completely different. As he lay down for 30 minutes, everything around him was getting darker with each passing minute, he said.
“I wasn’t able to comfort him at all. It was too much for me,” he said. “It was the first time in my life that anything was too much. I sat in a chair and I looked at him and said aloud, ‘I am not man enough. I can’t comfort my own son, with 14 hours left.'”
Not wanting to give up, however, he tried to summon up the courage and lie down with Griffin again. Finally, the third time he lay down with him, Darin touched his hair and grabbed his hand like a handshake. He recalls telling him, “I never even got to teach you how to shake hands, Griffin.”
What unfolded next was a transformative experience that changed Darin’s life forever. The following is what he shared:
Right there, at that moment, I was GONE. Like … lifted out of my body … gone. I was traveling with him. He was ahead of me, and he was looking back at me. He had his right hand behind him, and my left hand was holding his hand. We were traveling. It felt fast, but it wasn’t the wind. I could only see blue, and there was communication happening with me. I would get lots of information from what seemed like the atmosphere.
My initial response to Griffin was, “I can’t believe this is happening,” and he would look at me and his smile was just so large and he was so alive. But, when he would look away from me, I would become very ill, similar to the state I was in when I felt I wasn’t tough enough to comfort him. Then, he would look at me again, and that feeling would go away. It was just so intense … the love I felt, and then he would look away. The third time he looked away, I was so sick and nauseated by my own feelings of not being enough, and I thought to myself, “You’ve got to toughen up. This is a rare moment you are getting with your son. He is alive.” This time, Griffin looked at me, and he laughed. He knew my thoughts, and he knew them deeply. He chuckled and said, “Daddy, you aren’t sick!” I knew all of what he meant at that moment, spiritually and emotionally. I was NOT sick!
And then … I experienced the love of God. He was everywhere. He was the blue I saw, and totally encompassed me. I could see the things I had done in my life, the things I thought were good decisions but they weren’t. I could see business decisions that I made that were so wrong, because the perspective with which I made them had been selfish. I was supposed to be my brothers’ keeper. I didn’t take care of people like I should have. I felt God say that He’d put people in my life to take care of them, but I hadn’t. I could see these things play out and God showing me in a very peaceful and loving way, not a critical way. It was harsh, but so loving at the same time. Everything made sense.
I could see eternity, and see it precisely. It was to be outside of time. It was very clear to me there that Griffin, in his two years, did more than most men in one hundred years could conceivably do. His life was truly precious and accomplished.
We got to what seemed like the end, and it seemed Griffin was trying to introduce me to someone. His attention went somewhere and then he looked back at me. And then, he asked me, “Daddy, may I stay?” It was a yes or no question. I knew that I could say no, and that he would have been alive when I got back. It was crystal clear. But you know what I said? I said well beyond “You could stay.” I said, “Wow, son. Of course you can stay!”
Darin remembers clearly that the moment he uttered the word, “Wow,” he was back in his bed in the hospital shaking his son’s hand, and at that moment, everything was “really over.”
“That love that I felt there in heaven … it was clear that the most I could ever do with all the love I could ever muster up, was a tenth of one percent of the love that I experienced that God had for me,” Darin said of his profound experience.
Lives Transformed Through Realization of God’s Love
When doctors came in to take Griffin off life support, Darin found himself with a “peace beyond comprehension.” Jennifer recalls that, at that time, she knew something was different because he was comforting everyone else.
“I was not as affected by what was happening because my reality was what I was shown in heaven,” Darin said. “Eleven years later, that is my reality. I didn’t know if what I experienced would somehow wear off, or if the knowledge and memory of what I saw would fade.”
His journey toward faith might have been different compared to others and came on rather “dramatically and instantly.” However, he believes it’s stronger than ever now.
Jennifer said that, in the weeks following Griffin’s passing, her husband kept repeating the line, “Life is about love and relationship.”

Darin believes that these were the words he was given while he had the vivid experience of a glimpse of heaven. The encounter made him a completely different man who then had a sudden insatiable desire to read the Bible and learn everything he could about God.
He went down a path where he wanted to let everyone know about God, mend past relationships, and make things right with people in his life. Everyone was surprised and couldn’t believe how he’d changed, as he went from being an angry and volatile person to being patient, loving, gracious, and caring.
“It has been 11 years, and I see how he has totally changed, like a new creation,” Jennifer said. “I started to love my husband again, watching him love Jesus and love others.”
Purpose Redefined
Over the years, it’s not only Darin’s life that’s changed; he’s also made it his life’s focus to share God’s love with others.
He wants people to know that “Heaven” is real and that God’s love for us is unquestionable. He believes life is short and that our purpose is to love and serve God and one another.
In an attempt to help others, Darin has spoken to those who have questions about life and has developed a ministry around helping people on the verge of suicide.
For Darin, he knew it was like God gave him the ability to share hope with them. He strongly believes that people who are in crisis somehow end up in his path, so that he can help them to know about God’s love and about eternity.
Meanwhile, Jennifer went on receiving counseling after Griffin passed away. She remembers finding herself in a sad place over and over again.
However, one day, her counselor told her that nothing he could say to her would make her situation be less painful, but he asked her a poignant question.
“He asked me if I had any blessings in my life,” she recalled, “and then he advised me to begin thanking God for those blessings before I lose them. So I began to force myself, before I prayed and went over my laundry list of concerns and complaints, to thank God for each and every blessing in my life—and it totally reprogrammed my mind.
“I don’t know where we’d be if this never happened.”
Two years after Griffin changed his address to heaven, Jennifer and Darin were blessed with a daughter, named Alaina.
Jennifer quit her job and began staying at home to savor every moment of seeing her daughter grow up.

Dylan, who loved his brother with all his heart, is now married and lives close to his parents. Darin and Jennifer are so proud of both Dylan and Alaina.
“God didn’t have to do this, but He has been so gracious. He has helped me to have joy after all this pain,” Jennifer said. “God has been so good in the midst of this.”

Blessed Assurance
In January this year, Jennifer added another poem to the many she has written for her son; Griffin would have been 13.
“I have a lot of questions, but by the time I get to heaven, it won’t matter. I trust God’s plan is bigger than mine,” the mother of 3 said. “This is such a little part of life. Heaven is forever. This is all just a blink of an eye.”
Both parents confidently express that they know Griffin is with the Lord, and that, one day, they’ll all join him, and this time, it will be for eternity.

NOT AS ‘AN END IN THEMSELVES’!..which is PRIDE-FILLED DEADLY PARISEEISM, condemned by Our Lord, as also CAN BE with physical FASTING, IF it is only centered on what foods we eat or do not eat, and not on our INNER-MAN, -our souls, (like the Pharisees and Saducese of Jesus day, who only cared about outward legalistic external practices, (“To be seen of man”) ‘observing every jot and title of The Law’, not ‘The New Man’ ) but without FAITH or in LIVING OURSELVES repentant lives, WALKING WITH GOD. No beautiful rituals nor the mumbling of INSINCERE/EMPTY RATTLED-OFF PRAYERS, will get us into Heaven!..if our souls are not right with God…which is the essence of Jesus’ entire preaching. “Acquire the spirit of peace,(the Holy Spirit), and a thousand souls shall be saved around you!”-St. Seraphim of Sarov. So we dare not self-righteously, judge or condemn anyone, but pray for their enlightenment, and so LIVE ourselves, that we, by OUR EXAMPLE, even if we do not verbally speak about such things, may point them to a fuller more complete spiritual path, -the Orthodox Christian Path, and when asked by them, to SHARE OUR HOLY FAITH WITH THEM., but not min a useless spirit of angry self-righetous argumentiveness, which never converts anyone. Years ago an Orthodox Abbot said about the zealous among heterodox Christians: “They have SO LITTLE , but they do so much with it, while we Orthodox have SO MUCH, but we do so little with it!” This wonderful account, of God’s Mercy in action, is of those whom the Lord showed His love and power to, in ways which THEY could comprehend.. (GOD STOOPS DOWN TO OUR LEVEL, TO SHOW US THE PATH TO HIMSELF) -that is: both by the very INCARNATION OF CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, IN THE FLESH, and also of the message of this inspiring account: ”GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS, HIS WONDERS TO PERFORM”., “TO IF, BY ANY MEANS, TO SAVE SOME!”..because : GOD IS LOVE! Once again, you seem to not be aware of some facts.
We do not know. .nor dare we to assume, IF non-Orthodox, after their souls leave their bodies, -that they do not also experience THE SAME route into the next world, (whether they wish to, or not…) as we believe that we Orthodox will basically have to face our first jugement, and so forth, as Orthodox doctrine teaches that ALL must face. But that the Heterodox do not even know of. Certainly though, this blameless child’s soul went to Heaven, as even if he passed through the toll-houses, the demons could not have anything to blame him for, to imped or block his path to Heaven and God.
Perhaps, the difference is that we adult Orthodox who have been given more grace & more knowledge of spiritual things than they, and who should know how to better live and to better please God, will have to face a far more rigorous testing route, than those whom God has not granted to know this knowledge (for His inscrutable reasons) his more perfect will-than do the Heterodox and the Pagans, etc.
“To whom more is given, more will be expected”.
Hence it would seem, that: God will judge the non-Orthodox, more softly, less strongly. But that is only a supposition, as we here in this realm of existence, cannot know ALL that is on the Other Side, especially not what is the state of each individual soul there, until WE OURSELVES PASS ON TO IT.
However yes, the Heterodox Christians (as are in this inspiring article, do usually have many fanciful pleasant and romantic notions of the After-Life, and the most popular one, among all ”Who believe that there is a God”, is that , “ALL DEPARTED SOULS AUTOMATICALLY ‘GO TO HEAVEN’”, or, “IF YOU BELIEVE IN CHRIST, YOU WILL FOR SURE: GO TO HEAVEN”, & if you were a “Good Person”, .etc. But I believe, that such as this innocent angelic child, did go to Heaven.
Few of them, ..whether they call themselves, any degree of “Christians” or not, really believe that there is a real Hell, as that is unpleasant and not comforting. WE Orthodox, KNOW that there IS A HELL: -ETERNAL SEPARATION FROM GOD, and we assume, that unless we please God and acquire His Holy Spirit-THEOSIS, in this world, and REPENT of our sins, that..to Hell is where we can expect to go…as by our earthly lives, WE, BY OUR FREE-WILL PUT OURSELVES!... IN HEAVEN OR HELL…not God. And as Holy Scripture warns us, then, when our souls leave our frail perishable bodies, we will have to give an answer for all of our earthly sins.
At any rate, we who often proudly, call ourselves “Orthodox Christians”, cannot automatically assume, that because we know more of what precisely will happen to our souls when we depart our bodies, that therefore, WE know all about it, than the non-Orthodox or Pagans…as “Pride cometh before a fall”, and pride separates us from God.
The worst spiritual fault of many of the Protestant Heterodox,-as is presented to us in this article, by this child’s parents -newly awakened to God’s marvelous existence and mercy, … Is that their doctrine about salvation is very deficient and erroneous, and especially that they do not seem aware that this earthly life must be one of EACH BELIEVER’S ASCETIC SELF-DENIAL & STRUGGLE, because mere ‘faith’, ALONE, is not enough to get us into Heaven, where ‘Only the redeemed of the Lord-The Blameless”-as it would seem, is this angelic pure child, can possibly fit-in, may BELONG NATURALLY, dwell, as : “Faith without WORKS/Podvigs/STRUGGLES, is dead!” Our time on earth is our limited short time to CLEANSE OUR SOULS…which we Orthodox are supposed to be busy at.
BUT, we must always be aware that because God is All-Merciful, and He deals with each individual human being, HE CONDESCENDS, to our realities-of our entire life’s good deeds, or in this care the angelic innocence of this child, (about whom we may say: “Of whom this world was not worthy”. & acquired virtues and their faults, that He grants more condescsenion/forgiveness/leeway, to the weaker among us.
Most heterodox do not even know about fasting, or spiritual restraint, as one example of their weak & dangerous heretical off-balanced and ignorant theology…YET regardless, God loves them all, and desires for their salvation.
If they respected God’s saints, and their writings and wise advise as to how to live a sincere Christian daily life, THEN they would know much much more about the real spiritual world.
But, No, we have no way of automatically assuming, that the souls of the Heterodox, or Pagans, etc., do not also have to go through the same after-death trials & arduous route that we Orthodox believe we must. But we Orthodox will be judged more harshly.
When we leave this world, then perhaps, we will know all things.
God make us ready to leave this vale of tears, and be prepared to give an answer for our earthly lives.
“Grant me, O Lord, The Homeland of my heart’s desiring, making me a citizen of Paradise”. ALLELUIA!
