Bishop Anastassy (in the world - Anatoly Nikolaevich Surzhik) was born
in 1946 in Vladivostok. Since 2003 - he was the ROCOR Bishop of Vladivostok and the Far
Eastern-Russian diocese. In 1974 he graduated from the Physics Department of
FENU specializing in "physics", and he worked as a school teacher. In 1976 he
received the priestly rank in the Moscow Patriarchate, and in-absentia he
graduated from the Moscow Theological Seminary, and then - the Moscow
Theological Academy. In 1993, disagreeing with the policy of the
MP-Moscow church authorities, he and his parishioners left the
Moscow Patriarchate, and entered the jurisdiction of the ROCA. In 1997 he took his
monastic vows, having received the name of Anastassy. In 1999, by a decision of the
Synod of Bishops of the ROCA, he was approved as a candidate for being made a bishop.
So, in order for him to get better acquainted with the ROCA hierarchy, in the same
year, he arrived in New York City, but his episcopal consecration was delayed by the bishops, due to
his extremely harsh public attitude against the MP.
[which at that confused time-frame,
many of the ROCOR bishops were starting to take a submissive/friendly stance towards the MP]
It was obvious that such opponents of Sergianism and ecumenism as he publically was, inside of ROCOR,
were for some members of the Synod, made him seem
to them, as... undesirable. After the publication of Met. Vitaly's in
2001, his "Emergency Statement", the Holy Eusebius parish ceased to raise or commemorate in the services,
the name of their previous, ruling diocesan bishop, ROCOR Bishop Evtikhy [Kurochkin),
the traitor to the MP, and then all the ROCOR Far Eastern-Russian Deanery,- abandoned Bp. Evtikhy...then openly loyal to the MP, and moved under
the direct control of Metropolitan Vitaly [Ustinov] -then residing in Canada, and In June 2003,
Bishops Sergiy (Kindykov), Bartholomew (Vorobyov) and Antony (Rudei)
consecrated him a bishop, as "Bishop of Vladivostok and The Russian Far
East" in the Church of All Saints of the Russian Land (consecration performed in France).
Thus, the Vladivostok Archbishopric was restored, which had been part of
the ROCA since 1921. After the death, in Canada, of Metropolitan Vitaly, he took part
in the ordering [making order out of chaos] of the church administration, in his far eastern diocese, and he eventually resumed
eucharistic and prayerful full communion with Metropolitan Agafangel. And he and his flock, were received into our ROCA then.
