Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia

Behold, what is good, or what is good, but how can the brethren live together? (Ps 132.1).

All-honorable fathers, monastics and laity, brothers and sisters!

We gathered this time on the hospitable Serbian soil, since there are fewer and fewer places in this world where Christians can freely gather. This has never happened before. There were, of course, difficult times, even much worse than the current ones, but there have never been times associated with scientific and technological progress, the fruits of which gradually and imperceptibly capture the life and soul of man. It is now clear that scientific discoveries and modern technologies are capable of enslaving and manipulating people on a global scale.

All existing types of communication at a distance, both in the past and now, do not provide complete communication - the Apostle John even wrote about his Epistles: “I have many things to write to you, but I do not want to write them on paper with ink, but I hope to come to you and speak with my lips to lips, so that your joy may be full" (2 John 1.12). That is, not messages “on paper with ink,” but only mutual presence, gathering, gives the fullness of the joy of fellowship in Christ. It is against this fullness of communication, against the assembly—the Church—that modern technological progress is directed, wittingly or unwittingly.

One of the main signs of Christians is their unity: “The multitude of those who believed had one heart and one soul; and no one called anything of his property his own, but they had everything in common” (Acts 4.32). We must strive not to lose the fullness of the unity of Christian communion in a meeting, even the smallest meeting, for the sake of congregational prayer, in the midst of which Christ Himself is present, invisibly spiritually and visibly in the form of Holy Communion. There is nothing for a Christian that is higher than congregational prayer and the Communion of the Body and Blood of our Savior.

Nowadays, they are trying to separate people, forcing them to remain in isolation and at the same time keeping under control all methods of their mutual communication (in the USSR it was “wiretapping” and control of correspondence, now everything is much wider), and they are obsessively filling the dividing environment between people with artificially created a fictional reality in which there is no God. And all this is being built by the devil for the sole purpose of capturing human souls. Self-isolation is one of the forms of untruth of our time, this is what the devil wants from us - to isolate, in the end, even from the Church and, therefore, from Christ.

In the current reality, we are forced and must use various existing methods of mutual communication, otherwise the Apostles would not have written their Epistles, and their followers would not have rewritten them and sent them to other communities. But the Epistles (which were read only in the meeting), correspondence, books and all other information, without live communication of Christians, “mouth to mouth” - mutual prayer and communion of the Holy Body and Blood of Christ - in themselves, although very necessary, are not sufficient to salvation.

Therefore, our Council of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad calls on all its faithful children in these last times to prayer, prayer, if possible, as a congregation, without submitting to the dividing forces behind which hides the prince of this world, the power of the air (Eph 2.2). God is within each of us, therefore we must not weaken in mutual living prayer and always strive to resort to Holy Communion, where there is even the slightest opportunity for this. It is impossible to escape in isolation, as some people think. Just as they cannot be saved in divisions, which is what those who, voluntarily or unwittingly, do the will of the devil strive for. Salvation is only in the Church - a gathering of Orthodox Christians, in the midst of which is Christ Himself (Matthew 18.20). We are alive while we “with one accord, with one mouth, glorify God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom 15.5-6). And we believe that the small flock - the true Church of Christ - will remain until the end of this world and will meet their Savior at His glorious Second Coming!

Архиерейского Собора Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей

Белград, октябрь 2023 год

Се, что добро, или что красно, но еже жити братии вкупе? (Пс 132.1).

Всечестные отцы, монашествующие и миряне, братья и сестры!

Мы собрались в этот раз на гостеприимной сербской земле, поскольку всё меньше остаётся в этом мире мест, где могут свободно собраться христиане. Такого не было раньше. Были, конечно, трудные времена, даже гораздо горшие, чем нынешние, но времён, связанных с научным и техническим прогрессом, плоды которого постепенно и незаметно захватывают жизнь и душу человека, ещё не было никогда. Сейчас понятно, что научные открытия и современные технологии способны порабощать и манипулировать людьми в масштабах всего человечества.

Все существующие виды связи на расстоянии, как в прошлом, так и сейчас, не дают полноты общения — Апостол Иоанн писал даже о своих Посланиях: "Многое имею писать вам, но не хочу на бумаге чернилами, а надеюсь прийти к вам и говорить устами к устам, чтобы радость ваша была полна" (2Ин 1.12). То есть, не послания "на бумаге чернилами", а только взаимное присутствие, собрание, даёт полноту радости общения во Христе. Вот, против этой полноты общения, против собрания — Церкви, — и направлен, вольно или невольно, современный технический прогресс.

Одним из главных признаков христиан является их единство: "У множества же уверовавших было одно сердце и одна душа; и никто ничего из имения своего не называл своим, но все у них было общее" (Деян 4.32). Мы должны стремиться не потерять полноту единства христианского общения в собрании, пусть даже собрании самом малом, ради соборной молитвы, посреди которого незримо духовно, и зримо — в виде Святого Причастия, — присутствует Сам Христос. Нет для христианина ничего, что выше соборной молитвы и Причастия Тела и Крови нашего Спасителя.

В наше время пытаются разъединить людей, заставляя их пребывать в изоляции и при этом держа под контролем все способы их взаимного общения (в СССР это была "прослушка" и контроль переписки, сейчас всё гораздо шире), и навязчиво заполняют разъединяющую среду меж людьми искусственно созданной вымышленной действительностью, в которой нет Бога. И это всё строится диаволом с единственной целью — уловить человеческие души. Самоизоляция — это одна из форм неправды нашего времени, это то, что добивается диавол от нас — изолироваться, в итоге, даже от Церкви а, значит, от Христа.

В нынешней реальности мы вынуждены и должны пользоваться разными существующими способами взаимного общения, — иначе бы и Апостолы не писали своих Посланий, а их последователи их не переписывали бы и не рассылали в другие общины. Но Послания (которые зачитывались только в собрании), переписка, книги и вся другая информация, без живого общения христиан, "уста к устам" — взаимной молитвы и причастия Святых Тела и Крови Христовых — сами по себе хоть и очень нужны, но не довлеют ко спасению.

Потому наш Собор Архиереев Русской Православной Церкви Заграницей призывает всех своих верных чад в наступившие последние времена к молитве, молитве, по возможности, соборной, не подчиняясь разделяющим силам, за которыми прячется князь мира сего, господствующий в воздухе (Еф 2.2). Бог внутри каждого из нас, поэтому нельзя ослабевать во взаимной живой молитве и всегда стремиться прибегать ко Св. Причастию, там, где есть хоть малейшая для этого возможность. Спастись в изоляции, как думают некоторые, невозможно. Как не спасаются и в разделениях, к чему стремятся вольно или невольно исполняющие волю диавола. Спасение только в Церкви — собрании православных христиан, посреди которого Сам Христос (Мф 18.20). Мы живы, пока "единодушно, едиными устами славим Бога и Отца Господа нашего Иисуса Христа" (Рим 15.5-6). И верим, что малое стадо — истинная Церковь Христова — пребудет до конца этого мира и встретит своего Спасителя во Его славном Втором Пришествии!
