Joanna, I cannot tell by the exact wording of this article, if this priest is with OUR ROCOR, or…in the MP, or with ROCOR/MP in Russia…but if we trust the wording, he is one of OUR ROCOR priests…

ALSO on another clergy in Russia, I was informed yesterday, that the former MP Metropolitan-(?)  Hilarion (Alfeyev) for criticizing   Putin’s war on Ukraine, has been forced to leave Russia, and he is now in Hungary…but still functioning officially (it seems) as a cleric of the MP….and IF he makes his way to New York in time for the soon coming ROCOR/MP’s bishop’s meeting,…because he, being  well known around the world,  has long been very well liked here, he could be, (my speculation)  elected as their new Met…which Idea is not a new one among them….as this idea has been publically voiced before-when they talked of Hilarion Kapral’s age and ill health…i.e. and that they did not expect him to last for much longer, etc.

In Soviet Petersburg, following a denunciation by the Moscow Patriarchate for criticizing the "special operation" in Ukraine, ROCOR priest Hieromonk John (Kurmoyarov) was arrested. According to Russian law, he faces 10 years in prison.

Former hieromonk arrested in St. Petersburg in the case of discrediting the army

The Kalininsky District Court of St. Petersburg isolated the defrocked priest John Kurmoyarov from society. He will spend the next two months in a pre-trial detention center.

According to the joint press service of the courts of St. Petersburg, on June 8, the investigation's petition for the arrest of Kurmoyarov was granted, he was placed in custody until August 6. The former priest was charged under the second part of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code - public dissemination of deliberately false information about the use of the Russian Armed Forces for selfish motives.

Unreliable, according to preliminary data, was found in one of his videos published on YouTube. The  detention of the former clergyman  became known on June 8.

The media activity of Kurmoyarov with a bias towards discrediting the image of the Russian army was pointed out by the Western Vicariate of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was added on the site that Hieromonk John was deprived of his holy dignity by the church court of the Novosibirsk diocese, as well as by the decree of Patriarch Kirill of April 1 of this year.

In the Novosibirsk diocese, Kurmoyarov served as a full-time clergyman in the church and taught at the local seminary for a couple of years. In June 2020, he was banned from serving for two months for inconsistency with the title of cleric of the Russian Orthodox Church. He himself associated this with a post on the social network criticizing the decoration of the Main Church of the Russian Armed Forces in the Moscow region.

He was eventually allowed to wear a cassock, but in August of the same year he was fired from the seminary with a blessing to move to another diocese. It was not possible to find a place at the church after the move, and Kurmoyarov tried through the court to return to teaching at the Novosibirsk diocese with compensation for costs and moral suffering, which he estimated at 200 thousand rubles.

In January, the Nevsky District Court denied his claims, but the hieromonk did not lose faith and filed an appeal with the St. Petersburg City Court. There will be difficulties with attending the first meeting - it is scheduled for July 14.
