The Bulgarian court acknowledged that the visit of the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Kirill to Bulgaria in 2018 was actually a visit of a politician, not a clergyman, and did not see any slander in the words of the then Deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria Valery Simeonov, who called Kirill an agent of the KGB.
This decision was made by the Sofia District Court on March 17, but it became known only yesterday, reports the Balkan Observer.
On March 3, 2018, Bulgaria celebrated the 140th anniversary of the San Stefano Peace Treaty. The Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov expressed gratitude to all the peoples who helped Bulgaria 140 years ago.
In particular, letters with words of gratitude for the liberation of Bulgaria during the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878 were sent to the governments of Poland, Romania, Montenegro, Moldova, Finland, Ukraine - as a token of gratitude to the nations whose representatives died for the freedom of Bulgaria. On the occasion of the holiday, a parade was held, at which the President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev also expressed gratitude to all peoples who fought against the Ottoman Empire.
Patriarch Kirill of Moscow criticized the speech of the Bulgarian president in response, stressing that Bulgaria should thank only Russia.
Valery Simeonov reacted sharply to the dissatisfaction expressed by Kirill with the position of the Bulgarian authorities on the air of the Bulgarian television.
He stated that Patriarch Kirill is known as "the cigarette metropolitan of Russia."
“Since 1996, he has $ 14 billion from imports of excise-free cigarettes. This sly one of the 14 billion dollars worth of excise-free cigarettes imported and 4 billion worth of wine for the needs of the church, again without excise taxes. He has a private jet, a villa in Switzerland. His watch is worth 30,000. And he still dared to administer justice over the Bulgarian president, ”Simeonov said.
He also called Kirill "Agent Mikhailov" from the Soviet KGB.
“Proven, second-rate Soviet agent from the KGB. The one who said that human rights are a new heresy. And he still dared to administer justice over the Bulgarian president. And is this cunning guy telling me something? ”Simeonov said.
In court, Simeonov explained that his behavior could not cause unlawful harm, since it was a commentary on the behavior of a representative of a foreign state and his statements not as a spiritual and religious leader, but as the head of a foreign delegation, while a critical assessment of his motives and manifestations with political issues was made by Simeonov as a representative of the government of the Republic of Bulgaria.
He stated that the plaintiff did not have the authority to defend foreign subjective rights, in addition, the interests of the Russian Orthodox community, as well as the dogmas of religion and canonical disputes were not discussed, and his statement is part of a public discussion on an issue important to the public, and in this case the right to the expression of opinion takes precedence over the concerns of individual citizens on this topic.
The plaintiff in the case was Emil Milanov, a reserve general of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria, leader of the pro-Russian public organization International Slavic Community - Perun-2000, secretary of the Russophiles Movement, and chairman of the political party Revival of Bulgaria.
The court dismissed the charges and ordered the applicant to recover 150 BGN (approximately EUR 75) in legal costs.
