Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy!

Byzantine, Texas: Orthodox Prayer For Doctors and Nurses

From the oath of Hippocrates, according to the precepts to which a Christian is able to swear.

Blessed be our God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Existing One, who is blessed forever.  I do not lie.  I will not defile the teachings of the art of medicine.  I will not give a deadly drug to any person, even if asked, nor will I instruct any person in how to accomplish such a plan.  Similarly, I will not give a woman an agent to terminate a pregnancy, either from above or from below.  I will willingly teach this art of mine to anyone wishing to learn it, and shall require no written contracts.  I will institute therapies for my patients according to my best judgment and ability.  I will guard my craft in purity and in holiness.  Into whatever homes I enter, I shall enter in order to help those who are suffering.  I will keep myself free from intentional or unintentional misconduct, from vile and corrupt acts, and from the sexual exploitation of the body of a man or a woman, freeman or slave.  I shall not divulge anything I see or hear during the course of therapy, or outside its course.  I will keep silent concerning these things, considering peoples’ private affairs to be private, and not matters to be aired abroad.  If I fulfill my vow and do not make it void, then may God be my help, watching over both my life and my art, and may people always praise my keeping of my oath.  If, however, I do not fulfill this vow, then may the opposite be my fate.
