Subject: Bishop Johannes - an outline of his life

Bless!  The letter from Etna of Bishop Auxentius below outlines the life of the newly departed Bishop Johannes:-

Dear clergy and faithful:
Evlogeite; May God bless you.

To our great sorrow we learned of the repose at about 2 a.m. this morning in Stockholm, Sweden, of His Grace, Bishop Johannes (Deurloo) of Makarioupolis. His Grace, one of the Apostles of the contemporary Swedish Orthodox Church, had been ailing and bedridden for the past nine years, was ninety years old.

Bishop Johannes (Deurloo) was born near Rotterdam, Holland, on January 31, 1930. After leaving the Dutch Reformed Church in which he had been raised, he converted to Roman Catholicism and spent a short time in a Franciscan monastery. He went on to complete a three-year program in art at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Through his study of art and exposure to Iconography, he developed a keen interest in the Orthodox Church. After a crisis of conscience about matters of faith, he decided to forsake Roman Catholicism, and in 1965 moved to Sweden, where he met and, one year later, married his wife, Monica Johannesson. The couple subsequently had two children, and in 1973 the entire family converted to Orthodoxy.

In 1976, His Grace was ordained to the Diaconate by Metropolitan Irinej of what was then the Free Serbian Orthodox Church (now reconciled to the Serbian Patriarchate). In 1977, he was made a Presbyter and later raised to the dignity of Protopresbyter. Concerned about the ecumenical activities of the Serbian Church, in 1985 he petitioned to be received by Metropolitan Cyprian into what was then The Synod in Resistance. In 1990 he was awarded the Licentiate in Orthodox Theological Studies by the Center for Traditionalist Orthodox Studies in Etna, California.

After the repose of his Presbytera, who in 1999, shortly before her death was tonsured to the Great Schema with the name “Parthenia,” Bishop Johannes himself embraced the monastic life and was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite. He was subsequently tonsured to the Great Schema, and, following his election by the Holy Synod, was consecrated Bishop on the Sunday of
Cheesefare, February 27, 2000 (Old Style), with the titular See of Makarioupolis. Metropolitan Chrysostomos, of blessed memory, and I both took part in the Consecration.

Bishop Johannes continued to labor indefatigably in building up the Church in Sweden. The beautiful Cathedral of Sts. Constantine and Helen, which he founded, is located in the Vårberg district of Stockholm and was completed in 1998. Its flourishing community is comprised of Swedish converts to the Orthodox Faith and Russian, Bulgarian, Romanian, and Syrian Orthodox immigrants. An accomplished iconographer, His Grace painted many of the Icons that adorn the Cathedral and for many years taught iconography.

Bishop Johannes is survived by a son, Anders, and a daughter, Schema-Nun Justina. A gifted iconographer like her father, Mother Justina has been a monastic at the Convent of St. Elizabeth the Grand Duchess in Etna, California since 1988, and, since 2016, an instructor in iconography at the St. Photios Orthodox Theological Seminary, also located in Etna.

We ask that you all offer prayers for the repose of the soul of Bishop Johannes and that the clergy in particular celebrate the memorial services appointed for the third, ninth, and fortieth days. His Grace's fortieth day falls on Wednesday, August 26 (New Style). Eternal be his memory. Αἰωνία αὐτοῦ ἡ μνήμη.

Your Humble Servant,

† Bishop Auxentios of Etna and Portland
Servant of Metropolitan Chrysostomos

REQUEST FOR ALMS

OUR SAVIOUR'S PLACE

O All Holy Martyrs, Pray to God For Us!

Why this appeal?

Because I must!  finally make this abode, my sole shelter, more practically livable,(as it is not now nor has it been for a very long time), - and therefore it badly needs: an underground water supply line, (for water for myself and to give water to God's creatures, which depend on my outdoor water barrels),  with a simple but basic interior kitchen sink, a 220 current electric connection, my washing machine relocated into it, a basic shower for bathing WITH a hot water heater, and several other vital improvements-all of which I have lacked for many long years now. Also, the main cold weather season's  interior heating source; my large indoor wood-stove's interior and roof-top smoke stack PIPE- badly needs replacing, before it falls down.

A local nearby helper, a Christopher, is skilled and is able to do all of this work, and he is unemployed at present, so now he has both the time, the incentive and the will, and all of the necessary equipment, to accomplish all this. He wants to start this project in about a week from now. He will first need to scrape and remove the huge jungle-like surface growth, with his tractor, before he can do the trenching, etc.

Yesterday, he quoted a BARE-BONES ESTIMATE OF ABOUT $3,000.00 FOR MATERIALS AND LABOR. Could the end bill go over this sum? -- it may, but if so, I estimate by not much.

I live on a very  low social security monthly income, so I really need help to meet these basic and fundamental capital &  important improvements in my livability here.

So, any help which anyone may be able to render me, I will greatly appreciate it.

Good day to all,
I am not sure if you will have time to read this very long article.
But maybe if you are at home and cannot come out, you will have the time.
But I suggest that you all just try to read it to the very end, as it is really interesting and I thank God that there are still people seeking the truth and courageous enough-to tell the truth.
Have a good week-end.
We MUST HELP TELL THE TRUTH TO OTHERS
It is our duty
Thank you.

Abraham Lincoln – Standing as a Hero – Legends of America

Transcript of Emancipation Proclamation (1863)

print-friendly versionBy the President of the United States of America:

A Proclamation.

Whereas, on the twenty-second day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, a proclamation was issued by the President of the United States, containing, among other things, the following, to wit:

"That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive Government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.

"That the Executive will, on the first day of January aforesaid, by proclamation, designate the States and parts of States, if any, in which the people thereof, respectively, shall then be in rebellion against the United States; and the fact that any State, or the people thereof, shall on that day be, in good faith, represented in the Congress of the United States by members chosen thereto at elections wherein a majority of the qualified voters of such State shall have participated, shall, in the absence of strong countervailing testimony, be deemed conclusive evidence that such State, and the people thereof, are not then in rebellion against the United States."

Now, therefore I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, by virtue of the power in me vested as Commander-in-Chief, of the Army and Navy of the United States in time of actual armed rebellion against the authority and government of the United States, and as a fit and necessary war measure for suppressing said rebellion, do, on this first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and in accordance with my purpose so to do publicly proclaimed for the full period of one hundred days, from the day first above mentioned, order and designate as the States and parts of States wherein the people thereof respectively, are this day in rebellion against the United States, the following, to wit:

Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, (except the Parishes of St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Jefferson, St. John, St. Charles, St. James Ascension, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Orleans, including the City of New Orleans) Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, (except the forty-eight counties designated as West Virginia, and also the counties of Berkley, Accomac, Northampton, Elizabeth City, York, Princess Ann, and Norfolk, including the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth), and which excepted parts, are for the present, left precisely as if this proclamation were not issued.

And by virtue of the power, and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States, and parts of States, are, and henceforward shall be free; and that the Executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authorities thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons.

And I hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defence; and I recommend to them that, in all cases when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages.

And I further declare and make known, that such persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States to garrison forts, positions, stations, and other places, and to man vessels of all sorts in said service.

And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind, and the gracious favor of Almighty God.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the eighty-seventh.

Daniel,

God be with you!

I pray you are well in the wilderness. I understand how isolation can be difficult, but soon you will be counted more blessed than us because of it.

I am passing on to you my most recent email that I sent to my parishioners and others regarding this recent news. God give us strength. I will be including in this email our sister Joanna.

We must look closely at what the Ontario authorities said: "Communion" not "communion in a spoon". Many are missing this point. They think there will be some workaround available, like giving it in the hand or directly in the mouth like the Church did in the first few centuries. No, the demons are smarter than that and they are being very direct. Anyone who does not see the outright persecution of this is deluded, at best. Fr. Seraphim Rose's words seem so prophetic. If only he'd known how bad it would get!

God cover you.

Fr. Photios

---------------------------------------

My brothers and sisters,

You've undoubtedly read the email sent out by our Deacon Fr. James which included a video of a (New Calendar) priest announcing his inability to give Communion. I was moved to tears by the video, and so was my family. Here is an article with the video.   https://orthochristian.com/132432.html
This affects every type of church in Toronto, ours included. We have thousands of parishioners there.

When a man is ordained to the priesthood the Bishop lays the newly-consecrated Lamb on his hands and says "Take this and guard it well, for it will be asked of you again at the dread Second Coming." Our whole life is centered toward the Eucharist. Every service we have is a preparation for receiving the life-giving Body  and Blood of Christ. Without this we are not Christians.

Without Holy Communion there is no priesthood.

There is a point in the video where the priest says "And I feel that I cannot share with you today any sermon because I feel that I cannot talk about faith, about Christ." Without Holy Communion or even the prospect of receiving it, there is no strength behind what a priest says in his sermon.

Then the priest ends with something so powerful and true: "I feel that at this moment I only want to ask God to forgive us, to forgive our little faith, to forgive our weakness, to forgive us because we are not worthy to keep the great blessing of the Orthodox faith."

WARNING: Sensitive Readers can now stop reading and go about their day.

Despite what some may like to think, if we do not have Holy Communion we are NOT ORTHODOX, and WE ARE NOT CHRISTIANS. If we are not constantly orienting our lives in the direction of receiving the Eucharist, we are faithless. "I'll just pray in my home and stay pious." That's delusional at best. I know those who say such things and their lives are far from God.They don't pray in their homes. They don't fast. They don't study the Faith nor teach their children. They don't cultivate lives of piety directing themselves to the heart of the Church, Holy Communion. It's one thing if Communion is taken from us, but another when we purposefully absent ourselves from it and the Orthodox lifestyle that leads to it. I am reminded of the words of St. John of Kronstadt: "It is remarkable that, however much we trouble about our health, however much care we take of ourselves, whatever wholesome and pleasant food and drink we take, however much we walk in the fresh air, still, notwithstanding all this, in the end we sicken and corrupt; whilst the saints, who despise the flesh, and mortify it by continual abstinence and fasting, by lying on the bare earth, by watchfulness, labours, unceasing prayer, make both their souls and bodies immortal. Our well-fed bodies decay and after death emit an offensive odour, whilst theirs remain fragrant and flourishing both in life and after death. It is a remarkable thing: we, by building up our body, destroy it, whilst they, by destroying theirs, build it up – by caring only for the fragrance of their souls before God, they obtain fragrance of the body also.

They are trying to take the Church away from the faithful!! This is persecution!! The Ontario MOH goes on to detail how the persecution will look: "“Suspend[ing] activities that increase risk of disease transmission, including,” “Sharing or distributing materials or objects, which may include but is not limited to: books, communion, microphones, prayer mats, prayer shawls, water, etc.” and it continues, "“Suspend indoor singing activities and choir service,” and limit participation in services to no more than 30% of the capacity of the premises."

This is the elimination of everything we do!!!! Do we not see this?! We must come to our collective senses! Again:"I feel that at this moment I only want to ask God to forgive us, to forgive our little faith, to forgive our weakness, to forgive us because we are not worthy to keep the great blessing of the Orthodox faith."

My brothers and sisters make no mistake. This will come to us. In California they have banned church singing. I even linked to a Communist, Pravda-like news source lest anyone think I was leaning "too conservative". Over what? In Oregon alone the deaths are barely -barely- over 1%! The news is hyping all the skyrocketing cases of the disease. Of course there are greater numbers because there are more tests available! What they aren't highlighting is the paucity of the number of deaths! This disease is a relative wimp! This is no conspiracy! The numbers are right there!

And we are supposed to give up our religion for it?! Think about that! No one should be okay with this! There is quite literally nothing to fear with this virus! We have greater killers in our everyday living than this, influenza being one of them! The governments are trying to control us and the virus is the perfect pretense.

Please, my brothers and sisters, join me on my knees before the Lord, asking "God to forgive us, to forgive our little faith, to forgive our weakness, to forgive us because we are not worthy to keep the great blessing of the Orthodox faith." Prioritize what is truly important. Listen to the words of St. Basil the Great: "Trust therefore in the goodness of God and look for His support, knowing that if we turn to Him rightly and sincerely, not only will He not throw us away completely but even as we utter the very words of prayer, He says to us 'Behold, I am with you.'"

May God give us all strength. Let us pray! Let us repent! May God accept our supplications!
