Comments of a Greek Orthodox Bishop:
A fascinating article. The author, a Turk, is based in Ankara. She is an expert on Turkey's religious minorities. She has defended Turkey's Jews and Christians in a number of articles and openly state that Turkey is built on the ruins of the Orthodox culture that it ravaged. She identifies herself as being born into Islam. Her views are quite enlightened.

Russia always needs a harsh leader

Present Day Life in the Russian Federation: Russian town of Oryol trapped in Soviet past

Category: Understanding the mind-set and attitudes  of various average Russians,
living inside of the Russian Federation, today:

"And anyway Russia always needs a harsh leader," said one of the leading campaigners. "A firm hand at the top, like Stalin or Putin."
But then I must ask: Therefore, is there any real hope for any true or even a serious degree of, genuine democracy in Russia?....ever? Must it always be ruled by a heavy handed dictator?  Is Russia hopeless?

Russian town of Oryol trapped in Soviet past

A visit to Oryol brings a strong whiff of nostalgia On a small stage in a community hall, still grandly called a Palace of Culture, a powerfully built lady belts out an old Russian gypsy ballad.

Then a choir of podgy teenage girls troops out, all dressed in sky-blue party frocks, like something out of the 1950s.

The mostly elderly spectators, sitting in their raincoats on wooden chairs, listen attentively.

It is a fitting mid-afternoon concert to find in Oryol, a Russian provincial town which prides itself on its cultural heritage, and its links to an extraordinary number of Russian authors.

Ivan Turgenev, the 19th-Century Russian novelist of elegant love stories, came from here. So did Ivan Bunin, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. So did the ingenious storyteller Nikolai Leskov, the poets Tyutchev and Fet, the short story writer Leonid Andreev…

It is as if one small English town had produced Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, the Bronte sisters, T S Eliot and Philip Larkin and many more.

"How did this one place give rise to so much literary talent?" I asked the mayor, Sergei Stupin, who was taking me on a personal tour in his car, to show me all the writers' statues.

"Who knows?" he answered obliquely. "Something in the air, perhaps."

One of Oryol's famous sons - the romantic novelist Turgenev Oryol means "eagle" in Russian - a sculpture on a bridge in the town centre

Old Russia

The director of the Turgenev Museum, an enthusiastic bibliophile called Vera Yefremova, was clearer. "We are in the very middle of Russia," she said. "And in tsarist times Oryol was at the heart of a huge guberniya, or province, which covered a large area and included many estates.

"We like to call this the third literary capital of Russia, after Moscow and St Petersburg. Last year we had 65,000 visitors. But it could be so much more," she added wistfully.

Like everywhere else in provincial Russia, Oryol is looking to Moscow to furnish more federal funding for upcoming anniversaries. "To rebrand ourselves," says the mayor, a former marketing man.

But there's a long way to go before Oryol becomes a mecca for tourism. It feels trapped in time.

When I arrived by train from Moscow I was struck by how reminiscent it was of the Soviet towns I had known as a student.

Parts of Oryol are poor and dilapidated The town centre had some charming streets and nice views over a high bank where its two rivers meet.

But overall it looked as though it had been largely bypassed by the Russian boom years - roads filled with potholes, abandoned factory sites.

And in some older parts of town residents did not even have indoor toilets or running water. They were collecting water in plastic buckets from a standing tap in the street.

Communist influence

In political terms Oryol is also a throwback.

Curiously, the town council is half-controlled by Communists. And far from focusing on the upcoming 200-year anniversary of Turgenev, their current obsession is to put up a statue to Joseph Stalin - to commemorate his role as wartime leader.

It's a talking point which has split Oryol. One young journalist launched an online protest petition, which has already gathered thousands of signatures.

Many Russians still admire Stalin despite his reign of terror in which millions were shot or exiled But most people I spoke to told me a Stalin statue was a good idea: yes there had been repressions during Stalin's years, but what he had done during the war should never be forgotten. "And anyway Russia always needs a harsh leader," said one of the leading campaigners.  "A firm hand at the top, like Stalin or Putin."

Meanwhile the mayor, though he is allied to the Communists politically, says he's against it.

"A statue to Stalin would be too divisive in these difficult times," he told me. Possibly toeing the official line from Moscow, was what I thought.

So is this the old story of the Russian provinces - caught in a time-warp through lack of investment and opportunity?

Possibly Oryol's problem is at heart economic - the loss of factory jobs, with nothing to fill the gap. Hence the protest vote for the Communists, whose rule has not helped, given their lack of interest in helping private enterprise to create local wealth.

So everyone is beholden to the authorities. Everyone watches their back.

Below the radar, however, there were some whispered criticisms of President Putin. But only in private. One man even followed me down the street afterwards, scared in case I didn't understand that I shouldn't use his name.

And now Russia is in economic difficulties, and for these provincial towns life has just got much worse.
My guess is that people here will keep their heads down - unless the crisis becomes so deep that they have nothing to lose by speaking out.

more Kremlin abuse of captive ROC-MP Church

... And More Kremlin 'use' for its captive ROC/MP 'church'-

Comment: I do not understand the humorous meaning  of the insertion here, of  this Three Musketers video, or its connection to 'Pat'. Kyrill, etc. ... but as to the article itself, I will say a few words:

What is actually happening at this disgusting cornerstone blessing event?
The false-'Russian Church' organization, instituted by Joseph Stalin in 1943, and now  lead by KGB special agent Kyrill Gundaev, pretending to be the authentic Russian Patriarch, and dressed in that theatrical costume,   is  publically honoring a genuine old-Russian national hero, PLUS,...TOGETHER WITH.... all those of the rotten corrupt vile communist era- those murderers of the Russian Church and people, as if, there is any  real connection, as if, all.... have been true 'Russian National Patriots'!!!...as if, by implication, current Putin's KGB agents are also, 'national Russian heros working for Russia', etc.!
Such is the spiritual filth and pollution of neo-soviet hangover, dictator  'ex-KGB agent' (!), Vladimir Putin's current oppressive police-state, 'Russian Federation'  terror regime, and its adjunct 'church' the ROC/MP....i.e. it blesses both good and evil, TRUTH AND LIES, as if, both...... are  united and equal, the SAME!
It is evil USING the influence and trappings of holiness, in order to confuse and mislead and to control, the masses.
It is the same, in the end analysis,  as declaring that God and the Devil...are equal!
What pagan anti-Christian atheist blasphemy!
This is the typical mode of action and the mind  of Antichrist, and his servants, who appear as all good, all-holy,...as if GOD HIMSELF,  but underneath are evil incarnate, the 'whited sepulcher, full of dead men's bones' of the Gospel.

I want to separately add that to the blessed memory of Fyodor Ushakov my comment has nothing to do ... It's more of a protest against the attempts of our "valiant bodies" to stand with him on the same level ....

"" In this temple we especially pray for those employees of the state security, who died in the performance of his official duty, died in peace, protecting our homeland, "- said the head of the ROC at the ceremony." Their official duty consisted primarily in the destruction of the Orthodox Church.

Paschal Epistle of the Most Reverend Sophronius,
Archbishop of Saint Petersburg and Northern Russian

“The myrrh-bearing women at deep dawn, having stood before the tomb of the Life-giver, found an angel sitting upon the stone…”

From the teachings of the holy Fathers, we know that the Lord was crucified on the sixth day of the week, that is, on Friday, because in the beginning man was created on the sixth day. And in the sixth hour of the day, the Lord was hung upon the Cross, because at that hour Adam stretched forth his hands and touched the forbidden tree and died. For it was necessary that at the very same hour in which he destroyed himself that he also be recreated. The Lord was buried in a garden because Adam also fell in Paradise, and from that hour the gates of Eden were shut. The thief inserted the key – the words addressed to God: “Remember me” – and he opened the locked doors of Eden. The first who entered into Paradise was the thief, and the first who was brought down to the bottom of hades was Christ’s apostle who had fallen away [Judas]. And so, how all this occurred is a great lesson for us. It is said that in that place where Christ, the head of all things, was crucified, the skull of Adam lay, and thus it was washed by Christ’s blood which dripped down. The place is called “of a skull” because when the soil of the earth rose upwards from below during an earthquake, then one of Adam’s bones appeared on the surface. Out of respect for the primogenitor, King Solomon with all his soldiers covered this bone with a pile of stones; therefore, from that time this place was also called lithostroton – the stone bridge.

Remembering and empathizing with these events of the Lord’s holy passion, we stand with you with lighted candles in our hands as a sign that the light of the Godhead in Jesus Christ did not grow dim even during His passion on the Cross, and till now that light descends on the Lord’s tomb on the eve of holy Pascha. In this saving night the Church sings: “Now all things are filled with light, both heaven and earth, and the nether regions. Let all creation, therefore, celebrate the rising of Christ…” But those truly celebrate who have opened their hearts for the conscious acceptance of this joy. We must remember that we will not have a genuine Pascha, a genuine change and rebirth, if we do not ascend Golgotha. Without Golgotha there is no Pascha. However, in our daily life, we are often resentful when afflictions come, and we want only paschal joy. We satisfy ourselves with thoughts as to how  the Lord should arrange our earthly life. After all, we have received the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit, we have become followers of His teaching. We forget that the Lord has already paid the price for us and that for this he was reckoned among the transgressors. If He walked along such a path, how can we resent this path and reject it? And they shall consider us to be transgressors, and they shall revile us, and they shall buffet and spit on us for preaching His unlying Truth. But let the light of the Godhead, which now proceeds from the Lord’s tomb, illumine our thorny path and assist our rebirth, so that we may make room for the joy of the Lord’s Resurrection and be conscious of it.

I congratulate all the pastors worthy of honor, the monastics and the faithful children of our diocese on the occasion of the bright feast of the Lord’s Resurrection, and together with you and the angels I raise up the paschal greeting

Christ is risen!
