Victims of the Two Power-Verticles

IN MEMORIAM:
to our beloved, departed four years now,
brother Eugene L. Magerovsky, (Vechnaya Pamyat!)
who fought all of his life, to free Russia and it's Orthodox
people, from the tyranny of the godless Communists.
He too wanted the real Russian Church to be free of that slavery,
and he spent the last days of his life, though physically declining,
fighting the betrayal of our ROCOR in 2007, to that same apostate atheist-front,
called  'The Moscow Patriarchia', which false organization to this day, is still!
totally controlled by the Kremlin KGB/FSB gangsters.
He passed to his eternal reward on January 18, 2009, on the eve of Theophany.
May he indeed, REST WITH THE SAINTS!

"Gazeta": Victims of the two verticals. Boris Falikov the revival of the Soviet model of church-state relations based on total submission to the State Church

The ROC copies the authoritarian habits of the government, ignoring the requests for ethical values, which is formed by the community.

Earlier this year, in the Russian Orthodox Church, [the 'Moscow Patriarchia'] two events occurred that could easily go unnoticed by the public. Back in Zaostrovye, priest John Privalov was deprived of his parish and transferred to another assignment in the Cathedral of Arkhangelsk. In the suburbs, another cleric Dmitry Sverdlov was generally banned in the priestly service for five years. But what would have seemed to have been a purely religious event in the community, was instead though in fact, commonly known about, quite widely.

At first glance, they have nothing in common. Priest John is in line with the ideas of the famous Moscow priest Georgi Kochetkov and he created a strong parish, where he actively engaged in catechesis (instruction in the faith), developing a new community and the possibility of  using a Russian language liturgy. That is, as befits a true missionary, on the one hand, he opened wide the gates of the church, and on the other - he was seeking to apply in action a more meaningful life for the Church.

In general, he attempted to fight our perennial Russian problem, formulated by Leskov - "Rus was baptized, but not enlightened."

But this is not all. In his rectorship, he was not a stranger to secular education. The priest invited to his parish foreign lecturers in the respectable foreign Slavic -field: George Field, Nikita Struve, as well as domestic celebrities - Olga Sedakova the poetess, and the artist Sergei Jurassic. The dialogue between the Church and culture came to an end however  in an unexpected place - in the Archangel rural outback. It would seem that any possible harm, because of all this, should have been unexpected. But the ruling hierarch Metropolitan Daniel decided otherwise.

Dmitry Sverdlov is also famous [or infamous], for other things. He took an active part in the development of civil society. He observed and reported on the recent presidenital election, and he wrote about it as an interested and a critical journalist, and he was active in humanitarian aid in Crimea. But this did not prevent him from also building a new church and also in creating a strong parish. At one point he asked for helping staff, as psychological fatigue came over him, and he wanted to complete his church education, and finish writing Orthodox books for children. But Metropolitan Juvenal refused him his permission for all these plans, and chose to instead completely prohibit his ministry.

Are there in the ROC so many bright clerics that they can simply be thrown out, to the right and left?

And here it becomes clear, in what specific matters which were going on inside the church, which were  not pleasing to the authorities, with these two very different priests. Both have come from the general masses, they both approach their activities creatively, they led highly moral lives. Both showed the spiritual freedom that Christianity believes is one of it's main values. For this, they paid the price.

The fact is: that the current ROC, however, lives by completely different rules. This clumsy bureaucratic organization in which the title, 'bishop' -is the final law to the sheep. And he - humbly, is expected to be, the final expert in all decisions. Therefore, of all the Christian virtues, in the first place, to this bishop, is put.. obedience [to himself].

And anyone who does not know how to be a cog in the machine, can easily end up with the outcasts and renegades, and if time does not change his mind, he may even be thrown out among the heretics. This order from above, was as if to a soldier, is a direct command, for example, Metropolitan Daniel said: "From the denial of the authority of the vertical hierarchy, there has started all heresies and schisms." The main concern for this bureaucratic structure - is the struggle to maintain the notorious vertical-power structure. (God forbid!, if it ever becomes... weak), while simultaneously trampling on any seeds of freedom. But this is not all of the various trends of an internal church power-verticle, which imposes similar processes that are also occurring in the country, and by so doing, this reality inside the church, significantly enhances it.

The Kremlin with no less zeal, clings to this vertical-power structure, and suppresses any remnants of democratic freedoms. We are rapidly dropping into the recent past, and the old [soviet] model of church-state relations is revived in front of our eyes. What was it about? It was the full submission of of the church to the state. This had an impact on the shape of the ROC. To survive, it is hypocritical to suggest that this was to aid the USSR's struggle for peace, rather than to justify another stupidity, as the Politburo's invasion of Afghanistan, and then for the church to obediently brand as villains, such fighters against totalitarianism, like Solzhenitsyn. Of course, creativity and freedom are not departing totally from Orthodox life, but the church leaders became very fearful, that they may be seen, as disloyal to the Soviet authorities. By such tactics the ROC is now employing and is itself, now copying the authoritarian habits of the current government. All this is not surprising, with the formidable record of fearful historical events. But the story goes on, changing the consciousness of people who can not meekly accept such failures of the past. They did not create that past, themselves. But it is interesting that the ones more active than others in not tolerating this current situation, are those who seemingly are quite far from the church - mainly the city educated youth. They are the ones who are making so much noise and among whom, such concerns are being raised in their social networks, - about the repression of the two priests.

In the church, such criticism is extremely painful and rare, - about which, they in the church say, - the church has the right to influence the public, so as to enlighten us as to how we should vote, because the church, officially, pretends to be politically neutral.. But the point is not whether it is a church or any church, which says anything,  but that the church's criticism should be because of, ethical  reflection. And the reason is simple. Formation of a civil society requires social solidarity, which can not be created outside of ethical principles.

Not surprisingly, criticisms  of the Kremlin are now primarily of a moral nature (as an example: the fight against the "antisirotskogo law"). One of the prime sources  of traditional moral values is religion (which does not cancel out the existence of secular ethics), but the church  instead supports the immoral actions of the authorities, and in response, receives now a volley of criticism. And when the church is persecuting it's own clergy, in which situation, it has a living central aspect of morality to it, this moral issue has an  active central character to it, and in such a situation, the church receives an extra volley of criticism fired at it

Until the church authorities realize that much of the current "anti-clericalism" is based in this ethical basis, this ethical dilemma, no dialogue with society and itself will work.

More. If the ROC does not properly utilize the current situation, and if it does not adapt to the demand for moral values, which is formed in the community, it will only continue to exist to simply please the authorities, and to protect it's own ramshackle vertical-power structure, then   it will lose touch with the rapidly changing world.

OCA mistreats their former metropolitan

Current pathetic situation around former OCA Met. Jonah-Paffhausen,  – calls to ROCOR/MP and the MP, to save him, etc.

Comment:
WOE... to all those who seek a blessing or guidance or shelter or nourishment or salvation from the atheist-KGB run, Moscow Patriarchia!

It simply is not!..the real Russian Orthodox Church.  The evidence to this dark fact, is monumental, overwhelming, unassailable!

The old North American Metropolia in 1970, * (then itself in uncanonical schism from the Russian Church in Exile, under which it was in full canonical communion with and PART of, since their rebel 'Met' Platon-Rozhdyesvensky created his schism in the early 1920's), and then later, a large segment of the old free ROCOR in June of 2007, both.....mistakenly were fooled/mislead, and in ignorance accepted!.. that Communist, Stalin created in 1943,  religious-front organization, the MP, in truth a pretend Russian Church, AS IF!... it was and is now, the authentic Russian Church, the one that Holy New Confessor Patriarch Tikhon (Belavin) headed.

It is NOT!

Salvation comes from God, not the KGB!... "for vain is the help of man!".

What happens when you criticize Putin

What happens to you, in Putin's New Democratic Russia, when you criticize his government or his captive MP-church

And this captive KGB run, tyrannical and oppressive and UN-holy, Stalin founded, Moscow Patriarchia,  is the supposed 'Mother Russian Church' which  Met. Lavr Shkurla & his fellow traitors,  shamefully  subverted a large part of our old free Russian Church Abroad to, in that disgraceful 2007 tomos/KGB-engineered & granted 'autonomy'.

Those who have to live under that MP 'church' inside of the Russian Federation, see first hand, what  it is really all about, and thus why so many Russians are increasingly fleeing it, (if they have the means to, which many poorer Russians cannot emigrate out,  or just run away), or fleeing their native land, entirely,  for more free places on earth.

Even having to suffer much persecution, more and more sincere Orthodox believers there are voting with their feet, and joining anti-MP jurisdictions and parishes.

While those naive ones here in America,  who are still duped and still loyal to the ROCOR/MP gang, lead by Mr. Hilarion-Kapral and his crew, here in the free west, can, live in their fantasy land, look the other way, and  pretend to be 'autonomous' and not polluted by what evils go on inside of Putin's increasingly neo-Stalinist Russia,... and with THEIR 'Patriarch Kyrill' and his unholy MP organization.

To fight or flee
The political emigrants, as they call themselves, are finding refuge in Spain, Germany and Ukraine — the latter a not entirely safe destination but one that does not require a visa. In the fall, activist Leonid Razvozzhayev said Russia agents kidnapped him from Kiev and spirited him into Russia, where he faces charges of organizing mass disturbances.

Estonia also has been a favorite destination. Maxim Efimov, a human rights activist from the northern region of Karelia, won political asylum there in October. A year ago, as the protest movement was awakening, he posted an article critical of the Orthodox Church [the MP}, which  he said operated like a branch of the ruling United Russia party [Vladimir Putin's party].
His apartment was raided, he said, his computer and documents confiscated. Investigated for extremism, he was warned that he could face two years in jail for offending religious beliefs.

“As there is no independent judiciary in Karelia,"[Russian Federation]. he wrote on his blog, “it is likely that I will be found guilty.” He fled.
Two high-profile activists have repeatedly declared their intention to stay despite enormous risks.

Three cases have been brought against Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption blogger: misappropriating more than $500,000 worth of government-owned timber while he was an unpaid consultant to a regional governor, a case dating to 2009 that had been dropped; defrauding a now-defunct political party of $3.25 million for advertising services that were never provided; and cheating a transportation company out of $1.79 million. He was formally charged Friday in the timber case, but no trial date has been set.

A dialogue between the Archbishop and Petya

Note to the reader of this important conversation:
I gave up trying to differentiate which comments here
belong to this Petya or are SiR's Vladyka Chrysostomos's
astute  replies, etc.
Perhaps it doesn't matter..as a lot of truth is expressed
between the two of them.

Blgoslovite Vladyka Chrysostomos

------
Dear Petya:

Gospod' blagoslovit!
------

Dear Vladyka Chrysostomos,

I found this article in the Washington Post which on the 2nd page talks about an individual who was detained and sought after for his comments that the church appears to be an arm of the United Russia Party.  Seems to me that when you read the whole article it highlights the crack down on free speech which indicates that Putin is trying not so hard to show everyone in the country and abroad that he is in power and that the a New Age/Soviet age  will be back.

------
Vladyka: It is a frightening thing to see. More frightening is the fact that those in the West are blind to what is happening. At least when the ROCA was a bulwark of resistance against the Soviets and their use of the Patriarchate to bolster their position, someone in the emigre community was there to expose this sad situation. Now there is almost no one left to do so.
------

I recall that when Gorbachev came into power his schtick and political focus was on Perestroika.  He himself said that the country has to rebuild itself and become stronger in the process  He never advocated instituting a democratic process.  Rather his thrust was on making the country stronger by eliminating the wrongs in the bureaucracy and the structure of the government not democratize it!

------
I remember that political analysts observed this same thing at the time. Now, they simply act as though the legacy of Sovietism in the Russian Soviet Oligarchy is non-existent, pretending that a democracy has been established, even though they know that this is absolutely untrue.
------

Well, things are now going Putin's way and it seems that even when you leave the country, they will still come after you!  Nothing has changed

------
Indeed. And instead of Orthodoxy in Russia standing as a bulwark against all of this, the sin and heresy of phyletism has become a strong tool for Putin. The Moscow Patriarchate, filled with former KGB agents and collaborators, works hand-in-hand with him, while he calls the Russian emigrees back to Russianism, when they should be calling Putin and the Russian Oligarchy back to Orthodoxy.
------

My concerns are that the West does not appear to doing anything about it or voicing alarm on what Putin is doing  I guess the economics (oil) is what is preventing the West to bring Putin on the carpet.

------
That is a result of the moral decline of our own countries. We are stooping to the level of the Soviet heritage in Putin's Russia.
------

Also, I just read an article that the Russian stock exchange is offering shares for sale into the stock exchange trying to raise $500M  I don't think that they would do this if they felt that the West wouldn't jump at the chance and means that the West is not really interested in the internal political affairs of what Putin is doing.

------
Again, just as we ignore in our own countries (and especially the U.S.) the warnings of such men as Eisenhower against the rise of an industrial-military complex more interested in power than principle, we ignore the fact that every single principle of democracy has been trampled upon by Putin's regime. We look, as you say, to economic gain over and against principles.

So, we in the West are guilty of immoral actions, as well. We stand hand-in-hand with the murderous former KGB agents who rule Russia, overlooking our own devastating failures at moral leadership and accepting their bloody, ruthless, incomprehensible tactics as though they were merely the innocent mode de jour.
------

Also, with this increased activity by Putin,  I find that the 'attacks' on the West by ROCOR being somewhat odd.  In Archbishop Mark's Nativity Epistle he uses the excess of the West and the new calendar celebrations to show that the celebrating Nativity by the old calender brings one back to what Nativity is really about.

------
And yet he communes with ecumenists in the New Calendar jurisdictions, reviles us as having Mysteries that lead to "condemnation" (his words, not mine - and we have the text to prove it, which was sent to Archimandrite Alexis in England when he asked to be received into our jurisdiction, rather than join with Moscow).

We, with whom he was once in communion and whom he now considers "outside the Church" (again, we have a letter in which he says just this), while his ecumenical brothers in Moscow affirm that Rome is not outside the Church (!), celebrate on the Old Calendar and preach a conservative, observant Orthodoxy. How can he condemn us? Interestingly, this question shows that his condemnation of the West is less confessional than political, even if he may not understand or admit that, given the process in which he found himself caught up.
------

Archbishop Gabriel also points this out in his epistle as well.  Although they are both correct in that our Orthodox celebrations by the true calendar along with how we celebrate Nativity is different and meaningful in a spiritual aspect they in effect are openly supporting Putin's new political direction and slamming the West!

------
All of the ills of the West aside - and I do not justify or dismiss any of them, since those who offer hope to the world should never betray the trust others put in them - it is not the West that killed millions of Orthodox in Eastern Europe. And it was the West, its occasional and shameful failures (returning Russians escaping to freedom back to the Soviets in some instances) aside, that offered the ROCOR refuge from Stalin's killing spree and the madness of the Soviet utopia that Putin supported and which he has artlessly tried to equate with Orthodoxy: rendering the Soviet Caesar and Christ one!!!
------

As well, the Archbishops are criticizing their own Orthodox brothers with whom they are not only in communion with but meet regularly at the WCC in various other forums.

------
More important than that is the fact that they are sinfully in communion with ecumenists who, to quote Metropolitan John (Zizioulas) consider the idea of the primacy of Orthodoxy - THE basic ecclesiological dogma of the Church - "medieval" and "narcissistic"! Think about that.
------

Also, the Patriarch himself sends greetings to non orthodox heads (http://mospat.ru/en/2012/12/25/news78411/)on Dec 25  and to the all orthodox (http://mospat.ru/en/2013/01/07/news78720/) albeit on January 7!  Seems to be a bit hypocritical

------
Strangely, even though we celebrate on the Old Calendar and, if one wants to be absolutely historical and technically legalistic, received our Apostolic Succession from the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad (in fact, the historical Church of Russia, before the  "time of troubles"), with Moscow is now in Communion (without re-Consecrating its Bishops, I might add), we are somehow outside the Church and without Mysteries!

Curious ecclesiology, whatever tricks of the politico-theological trade one wants to apply.
------

So, I am afraid here is the first example that the MP/Putin are using ROCOR/MP to make their political points across to the faithful both in and outside of the country!

------
Where, in all of this, is the catholic Church? Where is True Orthodoxy, which is united in a sole confession? This is world Orthodoxy? A political game and officialdom created by ethnic ties and ecumenical oneness? I am afraid that the blindness to the Russian situation is secondary to the blindness to the nature, roots, and integrity of Orthodoxy. Orthodoxy is becoming in the Old World and the West a religion of convenience and of phyletism in the service of something other than Christ.
------

Your spiritual son in Jesus Christ

Petya

------
This is a very important collection of documents, Petya, and I am going to send out our exchange to our clergy/laity list. Thank you VERY much for this springboard from which to comment on the growth of a false understanding of the Church. Let us, out of love for True Orthodoxy and for our misled brethren, make our prayers more fervent for the love of Truth and not its shadow.

With paternal and fraternal love, Least Among Monks, + Archbishop Chrysostomos

ROCOR/MP's priest Victor Potapov has given shelter to refugee/cast away, former OCA Metropolitan Jonah-Paffhausen (!)

Category: Life is strange!

Note: The 'Archbishop Tikhon' mentioned here, (with his pet dog), is the OCA's new Metropolitan-Elect, as yet, apparently, not formally/officially  installed in that high position, but he and his beloved doggie, are already residing in their comfortable and spacious OCA Church Headquarters, on Long Island, New York.
And according to this information,  cast-off refugee/homeless/money-less, former OCA Metropolitan Jonah, may be received into ROCOR/MP.... which may have a use for him (!)... as his old OCA doesn't.
This article found on  << http://www.monomakhos.com> >

Max the Dog and Jonah
January 19, 2013

Following the OCA website these days has been an interesting pursuit.  We read that Archbishop Tikhon’s dog, Max, has been made comfortable in his new surroundings: a special window perch, a run of the chancery building and a sincere effort to offer him a nice new home, a place to rest his head, a place to call home, and all the special treatment of the Primate’s favorite pet.
But what about Jonah?
While Max has found a new home, Metropolitan Jonah has no place to go. As of the end of December he has been cut off from the OCA. No money, no status besides the limbo he now lives and the uncertainty of where he can lay his head.
While Max has the run of the Cathedral grounds, Jonah continues to be a “non-person” in the OCA. While we are told about Max’s special treatment we still wait to see if Jonah’s successor (as it were) will be a man of his word and release Jonah to the MP/ROCOR.
While Syosset is incapable of simple decency, we see that Jonah has been taken in by Protopresbyter Victor Potopov and the loving community at St John the Baptist Cathedral in Washington, DC. Because of their vision and Christian solicitude, His Beatitude is teaching a Bible study that we can follow on Youtube, even though he is in some type of internal exile. We also see that he is celebrating the Divine services there.
It would be good thing if Metropolitan Jonah was treated with the same respect that Max the dog has been given by his new neighbors. Isn’t it time to at least treat the former Primate with at least the same respect as Tikhon’s dog?
The longer the OCA dallies concerning the status of Metropolitan Jonah the more folks will question the basic decency of the OCA leadership. Hasn’t enough time passed to make a decision to let Jonah go so that he can fully minister to a Church and flock anxious to be fed by the crumbs that fall from the Master’s table? I submit it is long past time.
